Dropped Helmet

Genuine advice only PLEASEonyack

While moving some 6ft lockers today some of my colleagues dropped my helmet from the top of the locker. Am assuming the drop was all way to the deck. Enough to lift paint etc, dont want to start digging the paint off at the mo.

Should I wear it/bin it. Culprits yet to be confronted (should be fun)

Any thoughts/ advice...............

Replace it.

The only time you'll find out its fecked is when you need it to work. That's a real shitty time to find out it doesn't work. A 6ft drop is longer that it seems. Jump off the top of the lockers and land wrong and you'll see what I mean.

If its an Arai then I was told they'll take it and x-ray it to see if it needs replacing.

I agree with sockpuppet, as a drop like that will have caused considerable damage to the inner casing as well. A friend of mine fell off his bike at standstill last year and whacked his helmeted head on the floor. The dealers examined it and it was f***ed. Sorry to have to say all this, so good luck.

Replace it - simple as, for the same reasons as above. Shame that but make sure you get the culprit to fess up either out of principal if it was a Lidl helmet or do give you the dough if it was a nice expensive jobbie.

Because your head wasn't in it at the time, there is a good chance that it is OK, if it is an Arai, take it to Infinity and they will send it back to be tested. Have just had my Tour X come back from Arai with a certificate to say it is safe after 10 years plus of use.

May be worthwhile checking your own insurances - house contents, bike insurance and employers insurances especially if helmet is £500 and excess is £50.

Replace it.
You never know what kind of force has been applied to the material. Impacts create heat, heat creates a cemical reaction to the compounds of the helmet material.
Most helmet makers, recommend to replace a dropped helmet.
It's your life thats on the stake so, replace it although it's expensive.

Helmet

You say that the paint is lifting. This will allow water and other corrosive chemical in the air (exhaust fumes etc) to penetrate into the weave of the fabric. In an accident you need the shell to deform in a controlled way. I believe that this may well be compromised - so I would suggest it is replaced very soon.

Oh my God, the paint has lifted off, the exhaust fumes have got in, it's delaminating as we speak. Some people just got over it and carried on riding.
