The stock brakes on my DRZ 400S are crap so I want to upgrade. Was thinking new discs and pads and leaving the calipers as they are. Advice appreciated...

Sounds like a seized caliper to me..... as the brakes on DRZs are very good.
Make so checks around the two systems, front and rear.

Thanks chaps - I'll get them looked at. Last trail ride I just noticed that they were hardly working - certainly no emergency stopping. Fluid levels are correct, pads ok.

Possibly the pads/discs have been contaminated with oil/fluid etc.

Might be a good idea to get the brake cleaner out.

Brake cleaner

Thanks Doyle. Possibly ACF50 has got on the pads/discs, though I'm always careful to stay well away from the brakes when treating the bike. I've never used brake cleaner before - take it I don't need to remove wheels, just spray and spin?

I usually spray carefully on the disc and wipe with a cloth at the same time. But if your pads have stuff on them it would be better to take them out clean them and rough them up a bit in case they are glazed a bit.
worth a try anyway.
