before I throw something, or someone out the garage window..
I have a 2002 DRZ400s... and I noticed it wont stay running.. being very new to them .. the clymer manual only helps so much...
it starts first time, no laboring.. and when you go to restart it will catch first time also
it will run for about 1-2 mins... then abruptly stop.. no coughing or wheezing..

I just serviced it, replaced the stock air filter.. new plug.
I noticed the battery is fecked... charge it .. come back 2 days later.. almost dead... would this be the source.?.. or do I have to go dicking around with the carb?
I have a new battery ordered.. the higher 8.6 amp version...

Might be best to get the new battery before starting adjusting anything. It sounds like its getting a certain amount of fuel then running out?

The choke does have two settings on it have you checked it?

The float bowl may not be continually filling, could be several causes.
float/valve stuck, blocked filter/tap, fuel line collapsed internally....

This sounds like a fuel starvation issue.
You first need to check that good clean fuel is getting to the carb. Check your fuel filter.
Next, you need to give the carb a clean.
If this doesn't work, then get back to the forum.
GOOD LUCK.

yeah it only happens when the bike is left to idle... if the revs are kept up.. the bike will continue to run without issue.. but its still a pain

the battery arrived this morning, so I will swap it out.. then get that carb out.. give it a good clean.. check the filter.. and then update.., fingers crossed that will sort it..

thanks for all the help so far :beerjug:

I'd check the stator output voltages.

If the battery appears to be fecked, it might be because there is no charge at low engine speeds.

hi Timpo

its a S model.. 2002... ex police bike from Birmingham oddly enough..
didnt think the wild mountains of the Birmingham bull ring would need an off roader :-)

went to idle and cut out

So, it just stops, no splutter, no fade, no backfire?
If yo turn the fuel off the second it stops, take the screw (on Mikuni iirc?) out of the carb drain and see how much gas is in the bowl.
Check that fuel tap does shut the fuel off also, I say that as if it doesn't, there may be a piece of the tap rubber blocking the fuel pipe into the carb body, so just before the float needle valve. A charateristic failure of a bike that has been stood for some time with no fuel in it.
All so, try a spark test kit on the spark plug, so you'll need to rig a temporary fuel cell above the carb and run the bike with the tank off so you can look at the glow in the tester. http://www.gunson.co.uk/item.aspx?cat=698&item=4834
Check you main battery fuse for corrosion.
Do all the lights stay on, horn work, brake lights work?
Does it restart immediately and tick-over as normal? And then when you go to ride it, what happens?

yeah just dies abruptly as if you used a cut off switch or turned the engine off.. no labouring
checked the bowl and drained it using the screw, and it stopped when turned back
all electrics stay on with no fade or flicker, and will catch on first press of the button and start to run again..
will stay running no problem if riding.. or held at a higher rev..

sometimes if you let the clutch out (even a tiny bit)to take off it cuts out instantly.. but I wondered if that was me getting used to it

I will try the spark plug test...

problem solved

took out the carb
(who ever designed the internal layout for that bike needs a flying kick in the crotch)
After much swearing, threats and plasters.. the carb was stripped.. cleaned.. and reassembled... a fair amount of gunk lurking about especially in the filter mesh in the float bowl
then a lot more swearing for the re-installation..
adjusted the throttle idle position..
problem solved.. :D

thank you to all for suggestions and advice... its one of the best things about this site....
