Just got home after a nice man from Carole Nash came along and got my 012 GSA going with a set of jump leads. It had started well and travelled to a nearby petrol station but, after refuelling, a single clunk and all the lights go out. After a few minutes lights come back on again, but try the key again got the same clunk and lights off once more. A simple jump from a starter pack (75 minutes later) and she was up perfectly.

My question however is about all the popping back in the exhaust all the way home (less than 2 miles)? Is this some low battery effect on the electronics? When I got home I put the bike on charge and it registers flat (red icon - BMW charger) on the charger - so it didn't have much in it.

It's off to Geneva a week tomorrrow and I just want to know I have nothing more to worry about than buying a new battery!

Sounds like the battery is beyond being brought back to life by your charger, hence the red light. Anyway, just make sure all the connections are good first - battery/starter/earth-negs & then stick a meter on it & see what she reads. If it then drops away below say 11v when you switch on, you probably need a new battery.

Starting bikes with a jump can cause other issues, but let's not go there at this stage.

Sounds like it as the voltage variations will affect the fuel pump and ECU operation.

Get a lithium. They are protected internally from low current over discharge.
They don’t need an Optimate when left unused for months at a time.
They are not expensive.
Check the system charging voltage. If that goes too high it will kill any battery.

Batteries are fickle things,
Some just go flat and with a bump start or jump start will behave perfectly until the bike is turned off again.
Some start doing really strange things to the bikes electronics, I had one go on my TL in Germany lights doing strange things, Speedo and rev counter needles just going up and down for no reason, misfiring, coughing and splattering, It was so bad I was convinced something serious was wrong with the bike, new battery fitted in the morning and it was perfect again.
