Dumb question of the day. Engine bars.

I am seriously considering chucking a set of engine bars on my bike.

Any recommendations on what is good, bad or ugly.

Mate of mine swears by Hepco and Becker, but thought I'd get your view.

A few posts ago I mentioned dropping my bike at a stand still. I have BMW engine bars fitted and these absorbed all the impact with only a few scratches on the bars. The bars did flex and moved in enough to push a rubber bung into the rocker cover, probably 20mm or more. They flexed back when I lifted the bike up. I had read that the engine bars were not sufficient to protect the rocker box but mine did the job I bought them for.
I have had two services which including the valve checking and I don't think the bars were removed for access. I also think they look OK in mottled stainless finish, sadly the finish is spoiled if I sand out the scratches, I dont know how to get the finish back.
 
Have a set of genuine bmw engine bars for sale if interested. To fit 2013 lc.

FYI . I understand that a small adapter part can be purchased from BMW (cost about £8.00 a side) to enable 2013 MU engine bars to be fitted to later MU bikes.
 
I went with Wunderlich in the end as they looked similar to the BMW ones, were much cheaper and available in black to match my Triple Black

The SW Motech would have been my second choice, again in Black

The Wunderlich ones looked a bit more subtle though so won out for me
 
I have touratech bars (available in black). Fantastic but perhaps overkill for pure road riding. Although they offer superb protection, they are a fair bit wider than the BWM bars and i am often hitting them with my shin in town and trying to scrape them past car doors.

I got them the other day and they are much better quality than they look in the pictures, I dropped them off to my dealer and they are fitting them as we speak

Will post some pictures when I get my bike

I won't be off roading but just wanted something there in case I drop the bike when its stationary

Thouse touratech ones look pretty chunky! I won't be going off road and they may be a bit much :)

If they are did you do it yourself or can you recommend somewhere that does them, i'm guessing the guys that do cars could do them quite easily, I'd try it myself but I know I'd make a pigs ear of it.
 
Yep, i bought a length of white vinyl and had a go at it. I skimped and didn't get a decent 3M one, so had issues with the centre tank panel and getting the material in the the crevices near the petrol cap. If i had got 3m, i think it would have worked really well.

Big issue was the white was nowhere near the same as the Alpine White. I only wanted to do the side panels! The beak looks impossible! so i haven't done it. bit of an experiment really. needs doing property, with 3M in a colour to match the alpine white! (or if i don't get the GSA i might just do the whole thing olive green) so you just need to do the side panels which are easy to do.
