I'm trying to find a combined DVD recorder/VCR but with little success. My old mum's VCR dies a few weeks ago and we can't find a replacement "Sorry sir, there's no call for them now" :spitfire

Now that's all fine and dandy but she has a load of videos that she likes to watch (as well as her DVDs). So the only option seems to be to buy a combined unit that we can use to record her videos onto DVD. She then has the choice of watching the video or DVD. I suppose I could even transfer my vids onto DVD at the same time :augie

Does anyone have any experience of buying or using such a beast :nenau

The only one I have spotted so far is the Sony RDR-VX420. Now I like Sony, and have bought and used their kit for a number of years but I don't know what the opposition is, or how the Sony stacks up.

Please help this befuddled Tosser :o

Try QVC.co.uk but I know nothing about the Funai make.
Type 556912 in the search field.

You get a 30 money back guarantee. So buy it (£262), record all your videos to DVD ASAP, return the player and then go and buy a cheaper and probably better DVD recorder!
I have bought stuff from them and there are no problems returning packages - as long as they are not damaged etc by you.

I am surprised you can't find a cheap VCR. Maybe look in Cash Converters or similar. I would be tempted to buy a cheap 2nd hand VCR and a new DVD recorder, which you can get for about £50. Copy the Videos onto DVDs then stick the VCR in the loft ready for antiques roadshow in a few years time.

Just did a quick search and the following do Video Players:

don't buy a DVD recorder if you mum is not good with programing stuff.... they are unbelievably hard to set up to record and use.

better with sky plus or a freeview with built in harddrive... a lot easier to use:thumb
most of the people i know that have bought DVD recorders only use them for playing DVD's not recording.... if you do buy a DVD player get one that has DivX it can play stuff straight from a PC burned disc

I'm with Tuned on this one. We have a Humax 9200 and it's a doddle to programme using the on-air guide - the wife hasn't looked back since we got it, and we still haven't to round to watching the old backlog of VCR tapes.

To get the programmes off VCR, you could consider a TV card such as a Hauppauge 350, or an Avermedia Volar USB, which you can use to record TV on a PC. The Hauppauge is Better for slow PCs as it does all the hard work on the card, and the Avermedia needs a fast PC, but would give you a very compact TV (analogue and Freeview) on a laptop.

Another :thumb for the Humax 9200 Freeview Hard drive recorded.

I also have a Liteon Hard drive DVD recorder which is excellent and very easy to use. Have it connected up to a combined VHS and DV dual deck Video Player and easy to copy either format tapes onto DVDs with the setup. The Liteon uses an Easy guider menu system which takes you step by step through creating DVDs (or VCDs from CDrs), copy DVDs and copying from and to the Hard drive. Also has direct DV in for recording from DV Video Camera.

I have an older Liteon DVD recorder (no hard drive) and it is still going strong and also features the same Easy Guider menu system. Its connected to a VHS recorder and my Humax 9200 and is a doddle to create DVDs or VCDs on.
