Need to get a new one. Would like it to be auto ranging and with nice big numbers so it's easy to read, can read up to 10 amps and a resistance test that beeps if there's continuity would be nice. Don't want to spend lots of money ie fluke even if they are good.

Any recommendations? And where from?

Fluke are the dogsbollocks of meters, perhaps a second hand one of that fleabay? Something of an investment, last for years.

Maplin do some reasonable ones too.

Ebay is a great source of multi-meters.

But - I reckon a lot of them will have been lifted from work........ :augie

You can pick up a 7-series or 8-series Fluke for £50-£60 including case and leads.

Micronta do a nice little Credit-card sized meter which is ideal for packing with the bike when touring - can help out greatly.

If you are looking online - try RS and Farnell, then get the item details and do an internet search to get it cheaper.

There's a whole load here, at Tooled-up Linky............

First one looks fine, although a warm Fluke from ebay is not that much more.

For the bike I'd probably suggest a test led and small battery would be more useful, get a 12V LED with a lead to check 12V, and a normal white LED with leads and a 3V battery pack for continuity. If you want to measure current, then you are probably checking charging and will be in the garage. For which a DC clampmeter is an expensive but useful luxury.

Any recommendations?

I have both a "standard" sized and "pocket" sized DMM and the "pocket" sized DMM comes with me on trips. Mind you, the latter does not handle 10A.

You don't need anything fancy and expensive. The cheap meters have the same performance (for our purposes) as the expensive Fluke meters.

I don't know how DMMs are priced in the UK, but over here, you can get a very good unit for £20-25.

A different design than mine, but I like the portability of these units...under £20.

We used Fluke where I worked once upon a time and their kit is very robust and what I'd go for if money wasnt a consideration, but I bought a Maplin dvm about 20 years ago and its still going strong:thumb2.

Think I'm now tending towards the Maplin bigger one, and get a credit card sized dvm for out and about. Any more ideas welcome :)

Just noticed that the smaller of the two Maplin ones - I have already.

Not a bad wee meter, although the test leads are quite short. (take a small length of solid core cable with you) - it proved it's worth when a pal's Datatool imobiliser acted up, outside Geneva......... :eek

Only problem is.............................

I can't find it! (do they do them in YELLOW?)
