Might sound like a daft question but which is the best way to ride the single track road on the east side of Loch Ness, north to south or south to west ?

IMO

I've taken tours along it South to North a couple of times and the view halfway along as you crest the rise has always been worth stoping for.

Last year we saw 3 deer running across the fields in the tree line as we admired the view.
Enjoy!

Sherpa ;)

Hi Stef, I like it either way (down boy) If I could only go the East side 1 way of the run I would probably go from the North to the South, Inverness, Dores Fort Augustus. Lunch at the Dores Inn is worth a stop.
For a bit of variety sometimes I take the A9 South out of Inverness to Farr and take the High road to Fort Augustus.
Thinking about it, I probably do it that way as the A82 is better heading north.

From memory, when you`re at the North Eastern end of the Loch, there`s a sort of layby and fence/gate ( seem to remember a buttie stop there ) and the road is the only option available.....the 'South side' of the Loch .

Thanks for trying to help but I am completely lost. Any tips on nearest landmark / village / signpost etc.

Thanks again

I've only been on the east side from Ft Augustus to Foyers then cut east to Farr then the Glen Kyllachy road which bring you out near Tomatin on the A9 ... nice wee road.

From the South, heading along the A82, as you come into Fort Augutus the Abby is at the bottom of the hill, before the canal, the A82 wants you to keep going left, BUT NO, turn right, 90 deg, then keep going left, then Straviag to Inverness.. (I don’t do GPS, can you tell !)

If you find you have gone too far, past the canal, and are out of Fort Augustus, turn around and try again, it’s the Scottish Highlands, we usually have one road in and one road out, we keep the wee roads tae oor selves.
Take your time, enjoy. ;)

Many thanks to you and the previous respondent.

Cheers for the feedback guys, planning on taking a mate for a tour of the Highlands later this year will only be able to run the road in one direction. In the interest of science I thinkit would be better if i went and rode it both directions ...just to check :D

Last year i rode along the southern road of Loch Awe east to west and was so bored by the end of it I headed home, a few weeks later i rode it west to east and it was completly different the views were stunning. Even found a track that gave access to the lochs edge

I had to go and check it out.

I was right, The east side, heading South is slightly better and the A82 heading North (in January at least) is a blast.
I did it both ways just to make sure. :D

Form Inverness, take the B862, keep the river on your right hand side, and head for Holm Mills then Dores, at Dores DO NOT follow the signs for Fort Augustus, take the Foyers road, with the Loch on your right, then at Foyers take the Fort Augustus road. Watch out for the fast single track sections of loch side road with humps that throw you’re arse out of the seat and yer feet from yer pegs.
I was late at the Dores Inn (2.30) so I missed the lunch menu, but vegetable soup, a cheese and ham toasty and a wee pint of Guinness for £6.50 seemed fine to me.

Looking forward to next Saturday.
