Easter Wander 2014 - Vianden - 17-21 April

Whilst I can understand that it will be busy at the start of the Easter holidays, how can they justify/explain a 5 hour delay to a pre-booked crossing? Or have they had mechanical breakdowns?
And would they be so understanding if you were delayed getting to your pre-booked crossing as they expect you to be when they cannot take you across until 5 hours after the due time?

Nothing like a bit of unexpected chaos to test admin arrangements! The story I have is that a train broke down in the tunnel earlier today. That was eventually rescued but the catenary was damaged in the process. Repairing the damage has taken much longer than expected. Given that this is the busiest couple of days for ET and they are running a hugely reduced service, the delays are only going to get longer and longer until they get it mended, and will then take a while to clear the backlog. Instead of three crossing per hour, they are now operating one crossing every 90 mins (according to the cust serv desk).

So, I have bailed out of a long, long wait at Eurotunnel and 'suspended' my ticket. This means I can pitch up any time within 24hrs and they will slot me on to the next crossing with any room. Given that they were already fully booked all day tomorrow, that may entail another long wait. (On the very slightly brighter side, I was told at Customer Services that I will get a full refund for the original crossing, AND a complimentary crossing to boot.)

Assuming the problems in the tunnel are resolved overnight and I don't have to wait TOO long tomorrow, I will catch up with you all at the hotel in Vianden. That may involve a motorway dash.

Good luck everyone!

EDIT: Incidentally, they have now upgraded the 5 hr delay to a 6-hr delay!

Mechaniacal break down.

If anybody is stuck for the night and needs somewhere to say, call me ... (only 20 mins from tunnel ...)

Hardly dampened spirits at all!

In fact for me at least, looking back, it means I'll get a refund for this crossing, will get another complimentary free crossing, saved on a hotel bill for one night.

The whole trip was a huge success, though I travelled back on my own today. Some great roads in and around Vianden and Luxembourg in general. Huge thanks to Richard for his seamless organisational skills.

I'm sure a fuller write-up will follow shortly. But a great weekend in great company, full of laughs! Good to meet you all, some for the first time.

Echoing Robin's comments.

THANKS RICHARD

An excellent weekend, and on the way back I found an excellent road, with fresh tarmac, and loads of bends :D

See you all on the next one :thumby:

A top trip thanks Richard. Been home just over an hour, 530 miles today for me today :(

See you all again some time.

Hello everyone,

A good jaunt I thought, after a particularly dodgy start with all the train problems. We were blessed with good weather, not quite what was predicted.

My thanks to all who came along, Richard for his hospitality on Friday night and a special mention to those coming from well outside the SE of England.

Richard

Sounds like another excellent Wander.

Any tips for Vianden? Route? Im going there in May.....

Thanks

Phil

Phil, I'll email you the routes we took out, back and roundabout.
Many thanks, in your own time Richard.
