Effing Mouse

Mate called me to say his mouse would only work in the vertical plane, to date I've tried 3 different mouses(?), both PS2 and USB fittings, ball and optical. All produced same effect vertical plane only will not scroll left to right or vice versa.
Reinstalled/repaired windows, mouse still not working
Formatted H/Drive reinstalled windows, mouse still not working
New Mainboard another format and reinstallation, mouse still not working.
All the graphics appear to be working normally, any help great appreciated because it's getting close to out the fecking window time

Are there any ribbon cables or connectors betwen the back panel where the USB slots and PS2 ports are and the Mobo??

A dodgy connection/wire damaged there has got to be the only other possibility if the mobo's new and it's not the OS

Have you tried swopping the keyboard.............??? Its a shot in the dark but I had a bugger a couple of weeks ago that made the mouse scatty and it was a locked down key

Thanks for replies, on close inspection I see that the IDE ribbon for the h/drive has been badly kinked so this afternoon I'll replace that and then it's a low level format and reinstillation once more, Keyboard appears okay but a spare will be with me just in case.
