My Street Pilot III is wired into the socket thats by the headstock, via a Motorrad Concepts power lead.

I am getting a warning 'External power Lost' all the time, although it must be getting power sometimes otherwise |wouldnt get this warning. I have 2 SPIIIs and this happens with both of them so I suspect its smomething to do with the Canbus.

Any ideas please - will a software update do the trick?

Thanks,
Lloyd.

I've got a Nav 3 through one of Motorrad Concepts supplied leads. Only have one glitch in that if I fire the GPS up, start the engine (it doesn't shut it down either :) ) then when I get on the bike it switches off  Start engine / GPS first and no problems the rest of the day   Start GPS up after the engine is running again no problem. Can live with it like that.

Bike BTW is an 07 GSA.

Slightly different problem but same GPS unit. I am running a SP3 from the rear socket and have no problems with the power apart from sometimes when I stop, I switch off the ignition and the GPS and a short while later the bike starts to flash its front and rear lights at high speed. I usually just pull the plug out and put it back in or turn the ignition back on and off.
I am going to try it plugged into one of the two front sockets that are wired straight off the battery. Dont ask it just evolved that way over the months and I never got round to rerouting the wiring even after having the tank off to do the second front socket.:nenau

Thought about seeing what happens if you don't have the batteries in the SP3?

GPS Power Loss

Hi,
I have a Garmin SPIII and it caused the lights on my GS12 to flash, dealers couldn't say why apart from a technolgy incompatability. (Only seems to be a problem with BMW canbus, GPS works fine in my other vehicles).

I don't have the problem now I've fitted separate wiring for my aux sockets through a Centech AP-1.

There are other threads which detail canbus problems possibly rectified by a version 7 software update when using accessories with small current draw through a canbus aux socket.

Good Luck

Snap.

Minwe does this too but not every time. Odd, I agree.

Today I tried the SPIII without batteries. I also connected it after I had started the engine and had driven for a few yards on the basis that the system will complete its checks ( I still remember the fiasco I had with a blown headlight bulb)

It worked fine and did not give any error messages,

Next time I will put the batteries back in and see what happens then.

Thanks for the replies - very helpful as usual.

Same with my Quest 2 GPS - erratic "external power lost" messages. Seems to happen less if I make sure the GPS is powered up before switching on the ignition. Still happens sometimes, usually after about 30 seconds or so. Switchign the ignition off and back on again after a few seconds (usually while riding along  ) generally solves the problem.

Power to the GPS

I have a Motorrad Concepts mount for my Gamin 2610. It was supplied wired up for the headstock socket but I decided I wanted to be able to detach everything very easily and therefore fitted a normal BMW socket near the unit; this is wired up (with a fuse) direct to the battery. I threaded the wires under the tank without much difficulty. No clever technology and no problems!
