Electrics corroded

I fitted an autocom this weekend and taking the live feed from the back of the accessory socket as per autocom's instructions I discovered the plug and socket there were completely corroded together. They came apart after a lot of pulling in a shower of green dust.

Examining the other accessory socket next to the cluster it's not quite as bad but well on the way. Just wondered if this was normal. Lots of water getting up into the under-seat area it seems. It's an 04 bike with 17k miles on it. Otherwise working fine.

Particulary in and around the Rear lamp unit.
not so sure what to do about it .

Hi,

my bike went back to the dealer last week to replace some wires from the 12 V supply for the power socket. The dealer said the were "rotten away"? The power socket only gave 4 V in stead of 12 V.
My bike is from april 2004 and is (ab)used daily. I think 2 years is a bit short lifecycle for wires and connectors.

Just had rear Lamp and wiring replaced under warranty.

Also had socket corrosion problem but I was in a hurry so cleaned and resoldered as best I could - it could do with a new socket now though.

I usually pull all the plugs clean them if required and fill with silicone grease. Once done no need to worry again.

ACF 50 Anti Corrosion Block Grease is the stuff. Available from Nippy Normans for less than a fiver. This problem is not unique to BMWs you know, all motor bikes with exposed conectors will, and do,suffer (unless you don't ride during inclement weather or take the bike offroad).
