Hi all

I need some help with the electrics on my R80GS. It was running OK (electrically), but I decided to try to find the source of loud ticking noises in the engine, so I :-

removed heads and barrels (nothing wrong there except the rings were lined up - sorted, and the tappets needed slight adjustment)

removed timing chain cover and checked everything was OK with the chain and guides - relieved some tension in the chain.

I also replaced the neutral switch as it was leaking.

Anyway, put it all back together, and now I have electric issues !

I've checked the fuses - they're fine. Strangely, in my quest to find the fault, I tried running a heavy lead directly to the starter. I got it to spin, but not to engage and turn the engine ???

There doesn't seem to be any power getting to the starter, the idiot lights, the lights, etc. In fact, the only thing working seems to be the rear light and front parking light when I switch to 'park'.

Something has obviously been disturbed - any ideas ? Could it be the rotor or the diode board causing all the problems ?

Many thanks

If everything appears to be off - check the white connector block under the tank. This may have got pulled out slightly and will stop just about everything working including the generator and neutral lights

You've removed the front engine cover haven't you...

Have you replaced the little wire that runs through the front cover to the starter motor :D:D

Apart from that it's impossible to predict over the internet what you have and have not done when reassembling.

If the white block is OK check the other two blocks in the same location, the wires to the starter relay, and the earth point for the wiring harness, which is round about the coil bracket somewhere.

And check check the fuses again, with a voltmeter both sides.

Dont rule out the ignition switch either, the plastic back to the switch is held in place by two crimped ears which eventually wear and the back moves around, and this can be the cause of puzzling mystery failures = dahik

how are the earths ? have they got good continuity. The one connected near the back of the ignition coil, pulse amplifier thingy seems to be quite important

Now wait for the piss taking to start.............. But weve all done it.

I had the lads at Northwich nick push me round the block at six am after a shift Bugger would not start, ...... then I saw the kill switch... never let on though:aidan:aidan

Darn. I thought that ticking is normal?

How do we tell between healthy and not so healthy ticking noises?

If the bike is in gear, but sometimes it will require clutch pull in in neutral as well, I don't know why :nenau

Yes - with my old r80g/s I always had to pull the clutch in whether in neutral or not. In fact it would never start in gear, even with the clutch pulled in - which was a pain if I stalled as i had to get it back into neutral before I could start it again.

Diode has failed ;)

Diode has different locations depending on the model/year etc etc.
