Electronics Take Over

While riding yesterday I was forced to stop on a steep incline in a backstreet while the bike was set in Road Mode.

When it came time to take off again the normal technique of a good few revs and slipping of the clutch was applied... The results were not however as expected, the bike seem to bog down, necessitating throttle increase, as this lightened the front the electronics again seemed to kick in, again bogging things down, so I pulled in the clutch a touch and the revs rose to the point the front became so light it lifted, electronics kicked in, front went down, then came up..... Like a flaming Kangaroo!

I only recovered things by shifting weight to front.

The Electronics simply would not let me take off in a normal manner that I use on my other bikes, it simply would not allow a bite point to be found.

Anyone else experienced the Electronics having a mind of their own?

Sounds like traction control was kicking in. You could have switched to Enduro mode for more forgiving traction control or alternatively disabled it.

So to clarify ..... you need to select a certain riding mode to do a steep hill start? One assumes that BMW don't think it's riders are now capable of using a balance of clutch and throttle.
You have got to wonder about all this electronic shite .............. :blast

Just order an RT with Hill Start, problem solved ;)

Which is exactly what I did for the rest of the day (enduro)!

Due for a service shortly so will be mentioning this to the dealer as a big concern as I was close to being thrown off the thing, made for great conversation and piss take by my mates when we stopped for a cuppa.

Just don't get taken in by all this mode and traction control nonsense and next time get the 'standard' bike and use your normal riding instincts ;-)

Not convinced that was a good idea as ABS in Enduro mode behaves differently as it does in road modes. So my bet is that an emergency stop when needed on the road in Enduro mode will result in brown pants.

Traction control is super easy to switch off ya know !

Except that they all have traction control and at least two modes, and he was in road mode which is as per a 'standard' bike when the shit kicked in.

And as a short Arse, I was forced to take the package on the lowered suspension!

have done hill starts off road (loose red laterite trails) in enduro mode. The bikes moves off in a normal fashion. You were on tarmac ? Why don't you go back and repeat the event with another rider watching.

.

Aside from all the trolling. I have noticed that on steep hill starts a random issue where the biting point of the clutch seems to move to literally the last few millimetres before full release. The feeling is almost as if you have tried to pull away in neutral. I had put this down to perhaps the clutch not being happy with slipping/throttle/brake balance during slow riding up the hill in traffic. Now I wonder whether it is linked to the electronics taking over. Again a random issue that I have just got used to.

When my lack of technique brings the airhead to a stop on a doggy snotty hill I love the way the clutch and the low down ummmph of the engine allow me to gain traction by applying every beat of the engine one by one...

That said I still hate downhills (except on MTBs) so if I could have hill decent control that would be nice :D

seriously , if you're having trouble with the bike's electronic suite (or maybe more likely rider error) on tarmac , the first time you take her off road will be a real eye opener.

Well for starters off-road I would be in Enduro Mode, secondly after riding for 30+ years I think the riding errors would have shown up before now!

The fact is the bike performed differently under the particular situation, as I did nothing out of the norm the only thing left is the Electronics that did not perform correctly under the loaded condition, the bike went out of control plain and simple under its own control.

This sounds very similar to what was experienced, the bite ended up at the end of the clutch release and was so narrow as to allow no slipping of the clutch to ease take off.

aiya. go put gopro. repeat.

then its either u or the bike.

i think gs can go up inclines.

Yes the GS does go up inclines, just has difficulty in Road Mode!

Fit a Go Pro, you Malaysians must think we in the UK are made of money, I am surprised you didn't suggest a riding course to improve my riding to get at least to your exalted Skill Level, sure you must be a real Dakar Warrior?

if no gopro , get friend to video you with phone.

if its as you say , its so easy repeat.

and yeah , over where I live , bikes are very expensive.

Well pointed out . Also nothing wrong with the extras Mr Engineer Sir :thumby:
