I'll be doing my valve clearance as part of my GSA 1150 service this week so I thought of checking the end float first.
Sadly on Steptoe's thread on valve clearances / end float adjustment I can't view the key photos for some reason, they're just a tiny blue box with a question mark in them.

So does anyone have a photo of where to wedge my feelers for checking the end float, or a details explanation ? :nenau

Ta :D

if you can't figure it out step away from the tool box :D

If it was so obvious then why did Steptoe post a picture? We all have to learn. He may well see where it would need to be measured but wise enough to seek clarification.

Yep, I've doe my valves no worries on my bikes. Just never checked or adjusted end float.

I'll throw my tools away and take it into the steelers ;)

Prepare for one of the most frustrating exercises you've ever, and ever will, perform. The clearances will change with every tightening of the screws and the head stud nut. Our countries bombed Germany into a wasteland 60 years ago and they are still taking devious revenge on us for it.

Its no biggie "except" you have to loosen and retorque a head bolt as part of the process

Basically move the side you want to work on over to TDC where you would set the valves

The rocker arm has to have clearance to slide up and down the rocker bar

You wish to reduce this to a minimum value Buggered If I know what it is I think its in the thread I've done that many I can tell by feel now

Anyway if they need adjusting slacken the 3 torx bolts and the head stud and "just" nip them so they hold a little friction and gently tap the metal cap up against the arm with your feeler gauges in place

tighten torx bolts, Torque up Head nut AND then recheck clearances have not tightened!!!!!

THEN set valve clearances because even 4 thousandths of movement up the rocker shaft believe it or not changes them dramatically!

Ha ha yep, Neil says in his thread its tricky , but I'll give it a go once I've worked out where the feelers go. IDE rather know before I take the covers off.
I'm hopeful they'll be ok and at the tighter end of the allowable adjustment and not need doing at all, I'd b happy if both were at 10 thou and I just need to check the vales then. :D

I'd take it to Neil, ride away from there on his loaner, and not be bothered with it myself. Life is too short. A lot of these jobs are nothing for someone like Neil, but they can ruin the life of someone who just needs to do it only once.

If you won't listen to reason and insist on f#%@ing yourself, read the ridiculous write up on this job in the Hall of Wisdom on advrider.com. The writers there put the wank into wanker.

I'd be happy to use Neil's services and I probably will one day, but it would have to be when I was en route to the south coast for a Euro crossing. Simple fact is Neil lives in southern softy land and I'm in Manchester so its not just a trip around the corner for a service. :D plus I'd have to pitch my tent on the nicest roundabout I could find overnight as my bike would be hotter than a hot thing after a 200 plus mile blast, great for lube changes but not for valve settings etc. :blast
I'll rummage until I find a photo

Ehm Did Sir actually READ post 6 above?? :thumb

Yes DR thanks...;)

I've just had a look on YouTube and found a chap who's taken off the whole thing because his exhaust side on the end float adjuster has worn heavily where it meets the bottom of the rocker body. I'm getting a better understanding now that the whole thing only moves up and down, and I'm assuming the feelers go in where his has worn on the exhaust side and again on the inlet, then moving the rocker shaft up and down " free play" dictates the measurement between the bottom of the shaft and the end float arm.
:D

That could of course be utter bollocks I've just spouted but I think I know what I mean.....:blast

Page 11.25 in the manual

Thanks Cookie I managed to work it out once the cover was off. I can get a .5 in the fronts and a .10 in the rear so I'm inclined to leave well alone as they're on the right side of tighter. Done my valves just need to sort my new plug gaps and go and warm the oil on a run.
Of course I managed to stuff the rubber Gromit into the viewing hole!!:blast

Not going to worry about that as I assume it will either lay at the bottom or get eat for breakfast. Stupid bloody design that is.

Thanks Neil I worked it out, but didn't stuff my feelers in that far. All seems good anyway at the tight end of what seems to be best so I've left well alone.

I won't be dropping another Gromit in that hole again, feck knows why I took it off really.:blast:D

Lucky I had my old jeans and boots on today for the test ride.

Left pot pissed oil all over my foot and leg.
The bloody donut washer has a rip in it. :blast

Oh well it's running nice and sweet and sounds quieter.
Oil/filter/final drive oil tmrw then I'm good for a bit of a euro jaunt....:D
