How anal do I have to be with my endfloat tolerances?

The book says 0.03-0.07mm however I have gaps between 0.100 & 0.250
Thats a big difference. Should I bother to shim or just stitch her back up & ride it? Does it really matter?

As you have more than one I assume you mean gearbox end-float.

I always try to be as close to 0.05mm as I can get, however its difficult as . .

1. The height of the bearings above the shimming plate show variations around the circumference (I take six readings each).

2. The depth readings in the end cover ditto.

3. I only have four shim thicknesses to play with (0.20, 0.28, 0.38 & 0.5mm).

4. Putting multiple shims together doesn't give the sum of their thicknesses :blast

I have to try various combinations to get an acceptable result.

The received wisdom is that too much endfloat is bad :thumb2

(But then, so is pre-load :blast).

Seems to work for me :augie

Bob.

He's phrased the question poorly.

He's actually talking about the top end rocker endfloat, between the pillow blocks. Not his gearbox. I know this because he posted down here in NZ as well (but didn't get a useful response there).

But good (& useful) response anyway Voyager.. :thumb

Cheers, Steve

sorry Nutsos right- I did mean rocker endfloat. Many apologies.
Thanks for the info voyager.I appreciate the time taken.:thumb2

Robs very right again me thinks
I tried and pissed about trying to get mine down to the "manual" tollerances
Nearly fooooooked it all up by it getting toooooo tight
At the "airhead weekend" when folk wernt watchin I measured their endfloat gaps
most had twice and more than the max - the engines we running like swiss watches :thumb2

I hope you didn't use Sids dodgy feeler gauges. Steptoe was caught out with those doing Dave Darhorses valve clearanaces.

Another good tip Rob
I will check my 3 sets tommora against my more than likely dodgy micrometer
see what measures what :thumb2
or its back to cornflake box and fag papers :D

 Well I did. Other than some being a mite corrugated, what was wrong with them? Marked with the incorrect sizes?

Oh, I adjusted my rocker end-float at the Wee-kend, it was amazing what a difference a (very) few thous made to the noise level.

And although it's been said lots of times before, thanks again for a GREAT week end, Sid. :thumb2
