A friend of mine bought an engine additive from Halfords (he couldn't remember the name) for engines that had done over 85,000 miles. He put it in his r100 air head and reports less oil usage. Anyone tried/tested said product
Cheers

there are lots of oil additives on the market, from slick 50 to cheap gunk.

not really sure how its supposed to work, as essentially its just very very thick glupey oil.

i would say that next time he does a oil change it will need another load added....

so where is the point? it cant re seat valves, it wont re bore the cylinder, it wont re vitalise the rings, so back to my first point, i cant see how it works:nenau

Just stick to decent fuel.. that has all the additives your bikes engine needs, in the correct proportions.

Yip, additives like this are usually part bullshit. I had a fellow biker here in Shet telling me about some additive and how he puts any old 20-50 in as this additive is so amazing. Funnily enough Perf Bikes in about 1992 panned the same stuff. It's all in the sales pitch:augie as are most things:D

Thanks chaps
Yes thought as much myself. I havn't got a problem with my bike , 86000 and still pulling like a train, just thought I'd check responses. :aidan

Has anyone used Motorkote? www.motorkote.com

I tried my GS11it in 50 and with 60000 and I saw a big difference in the engine temperature and the noise as well as fuel economy !
The additives wont repair an engine they will just make it work better.

+1 :thumb2

I Don't see Taxi drivers around here adding anything and with over 300K on the clock :nenau

Sugar....used it in everyone else's bikes

PS not really

Slick 50 is a friction modifier, the 'old engine' additives are more likely to be viscocity modifiers

Was it Activ8 by any chance? :nenau

Motorkote Lasts for 4 oil changes, saves fuel, eliminates dry starts increases Tow Power, Makes any brand of oil inclulding Synthetics perform better and last longer. Works in Engine, Transmission, Differential, Power Steering, Hydraulics and more.
I am telling you It really made a difference in my bike and this weekend I am going to try it on My 79 R80 !

Do a search for slick 50 and the results from tests in the usa - they've banned it's use in piston engined light aircraft, and it causes more engine wear by blocking the oil filter and the oil ways, plus it produces highly corrosive exhaust vapours that eat away at the exhaust internally. Plus teflon don't recommend the use of teflon in engine additives.

All these oil additives aren't worth a bag of pigeon shite. :D In fact adding pigeon shite to your engine is more beneficial than all the highly (self) publicised products.

As a non pro i didn't want to critisise before but a mechanic told me never to use slick 50 etc after he opened engines with blocked oilways:eek: The stuff I was bulled about was ZX1 or similar and they are colloquially called "micro lubes".

They are big in the US, the home of the Big Sell, so that should tell you summat. Might be that their engines are a bit shite:D

your better off using an oil flushing agent, as it can ensure everything is nice and clean when you empty the oil out!!

Please, please don't use oil additives. Oil co's spend years (well decent ones do) building an oil then testing it in labs, then engine test cells, then on the road to ensure the mixture of base oil and additive package work together correctly over extended periods and extreme conditions. The oil has in it a delicate mix of additives, so when you go pouring in what is in effect another bunch of additives, it unbalances this delicate mix. So what, surely the more additives the better? NO! Every additive has an effect on every other additive, some not so much, but some are really detrimental to others, and you can easily end up with a concoction that will protect your engine less that the original oil. If you want to put the best oil in your engine, which one assumes is why you are adding additives, just buy a really good oil to start with!
Just another opinion, I have many:augie

So it's a NO then!
Perhaps I'll buy a bottle of wine with the money I've saved
:beerjug:

In Greece he majority of taxi drivers use motorkote and they are very pleased with its performance and the benefits they get from it. As I said I used it in my 1150 gs and I am very happy with the results.
Motorkote doesnt affect the oil you put in it just bonds to the metal parts of your engine to form an extra protection coat.
