Engine bars - advice please?

I have the GS triple black and not sure which engine bars to buy. I rarely go off road / want to fit them myself assuming they are just bolt on with a torque wrench, and would prefer black (can get them powder coated if I need to)

Any ideas please which is best and why? as there are so many to choose from.

I have the hepco becker bars which they do in black and u can buy the upper tank protectors later to add to them if you wish, I chose these because they do not need to be removed for any servicing etc.
cost about £170 .
I later found these on this site which look good value and are worth checking out.

I have just fitted a set of Motech lower bars to my TB, pretty straight forward to fit. Just make sure you get all the bolts in first then start tightening

Engine Bars for R1200GS

Stahlkoffer (based in the West Midlands) have just started producing crash bars for the R1200GS. They come in either black or silver & at £125.00 include all the stainless steel nuts, washers, spacers etc.
If you have not already purchased a set take a look on the GALLERIES section of the website. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Back to the forum as not been able to go on lately and i like the look of both the stahlkoffer and the machine art. Think the latter favorite at moment but will start looking again as getting ready for a tour.

The genuine BMW ones are only around £70 and do the same job as these.

Not realy the BM ones only give protection to a much smaller part of the cylinder head

rt001, I like the look of those Machine Art head protectors - as you say, they give the protection without the weight. And also easier to keep clean. I've checked the Nippy Norman site and they say specifically that they won't fit GS's from 2010 on. How did you get them to fit your TB??

I hope you guys don't mind a comment from a 1150 rider.
If I was buying a 1200RT then I would go for the head guards-bars somehow look a little out of place on the RT. My 2003 GS came with most things (had money in those days) including engine bars. They saved the day when we came off in the wilds of Shropshire with only a broken front indicator and a few scuffs as souvenirs. I think the GS looks right with bars and the give you somewhere to put your feet on long runs!

Correct - the later 2010's are a different part number and still cheaper than BMW genuine GSA ali ones
Difference is The NN ones actually work as opposed to ripping off the first time you use them

Compare the prices in America and think you will find that NN is not particularly takin the piss - Machine Art stuff is not cheap. That said some folks may think that £22 for a bit of sticky back vinyl is expensive as well

I have a GS 1100 and I have Wunderlich bars on mine. The bike has been over a few times and they look good (even scuffed!) and protect the engine well too. They are available for the 1200.
