Hi,

was washing my august 2015 gsa last weekend and noticed a lot of corrosion bubbling under the paint, mostly on the throttle side of the bike. Have taken it to the local dealers on Friday so it will be interesting the outcome. I thought this was only a problem on silver engines ?

Unusual you say?

Not seen that befor?

Silver engines!

Guys silver or black makes no odds! My GSA had a new engine 900 miles ago and the engine looks worse than my 06 ZX10R already! I've only washed it once as it's been at the dealer 7 times for various reasons!

I give up!

I will be keen to hear what Jacksons do about it as I am seriously considering a GSA next year. I bought a used BMW car from them last August and I must admit the aftersales service has been great which has influenced my plans to buy one from them.

I'm surprised,as my local Jacksons are arrogant twats.

I wouldn't buy a bike from them again even if they could sell one where the paint stayed on more than 5 minutes after leaving the showroom !!

Agree with Arsey, I wanted to buy the Blue 1200GSA in Jacksons showroom about a year ago but they offered me a pittance for my GSA on trade in.

We haggled around the price but the numbers didn't work for me, if they had offered a reasonable price for mine the deal would have been done, but they weren't interested, the Blue 1200 GSA is still sitting in the showroom in fact its a 2015 they are using it to demo now.

Jacksons are not interested in trade-ins, actually I don't believe they like selling motorbikes at all.

I decided to keep my bike.

I agree with both of you about trade ins there They have already insulted me with a trade in quote on my 2010 GS TC but I expected that as they don't like trade ins as they have to sell them on to the trade. They kicked me in the nuts with a trade in offer on my car too so I just sold it quickly myself and waved some cash under their noses which did the job. I am certain they would not sell bikes if they were not forced to. That is clear by the used prices of the bikes that are gathering dust in their showroom. A 2013 GS WC which clearly was not loved by first owner up for £9,995 and has been for about 2 years.....

I suspect they mark them up high to cover the warranties but if they asked realistic prices they might actually sell one. I test rode that Blue GSA at the end of last year and really liked it - which is why I fancy one next year. It will probably still be there for sale when I start looking....... For the same money too. As and when the time comes I will sell mine privately and go in with a genuine realistic offer on what ever they have and walk away if they don't want my money. I did this last year for a used car and won after holding out for about 2 weeks.

Hope you get your paint sorted.

can the op post some pics? it sounds like if you have another engine it will be the same in a short period of time..cant you use the problem as a bargaining chip for a new bike?

Ha that was my old lc that's still for sale, I did love it but also went to Spain several times and Morocco and back still for sale now. They don't seem bothered about selling bikes at all, just premium cars. Not heard back yet and from previous experience will no doubt have to chase them.
Still can't work it out but it's cheaper to have a service by boxer passion in Rennes and a nice meal than with jacksons. Bmw uk when questioned why they don't have a service menu which is followed by their dealers as in France could not give a sensible answer. Will update when I eventually hear back.

Well didn't hear back from the dealer so called them last friday and wad told bmw uk required pics of both sides of the bike to view the condition. wtf the bike is is only 18 months old and the dealer had already viewed it and taken pics of the corrosion.
i sent these pics as required and had a txt from the dealer acknowledging receipt on tuesday. i asked for a prompt response and a response from bmw as to why this has happened and what their response will be.Still waiting.:blast

Best not show them your last bike :green gri
Only joking. Me and my big mouth eh. When I said unloved I obviously meant well used :thumb

Hope you get it sorted.

Had a reply yesterday that bmw will supply a new short motor. When questioned about warranty, who will pay the 600 mile service as I have not long paid for a service on my existing motor and how it works with my local dvs about change on serial number, no answers.
No slur on the guy at Jacksons as he is doing his best, but he doesn't seem to have had the training and back up on dealing with motorcycles full stop.
I am concerned about explaining the change of motor when I eventually sell it, if I do so privately. I have asked for bmw to contact myself and if I don't hear from them will do so directly.
I don't think they realise what a ball ache this all is and never come across this in my biking past of 40 yrs.

Short motor? I doubt it. That would just add time and cost to the claim to strip and rebuild the engine. It'll almost certainly be a new engine ready to run with oil & filter already fitted !

The 600 mile service is covered as part of the warranty claim so no cost to you

It's up to you to change the serial number on your registration document and your dealer will give you printed confirmation of that serial number

Why would you be concerned about explaining the change of engine?

Why do you need BMW to contact you?

Why is it a ball ache when you live on an island 5 miles long and 9 miles wide?

You should be grateful you don't live on Shetland

I would not be confident with Jacksons doing the engine swap They took months resolving my fuel strip after a fuel pump recall.

It was only fixed after I insisted they contact BMW after two replacement strips and endless calibration attempts and them threatening to charge me for it. Once BMW were involved it was sorted immediately.

I would contact BMW and request the engine change was done by BMW technicians at one of their garages in either the UK or France.

Or you could ask them for a contribution towards a new bike, if changing the engine concerns you.

I'm asking for bmw to contact me as I was concerned when the dealer told me a short motor would be supplied, and when asked about the motor warranty wasn't sure. If I was looking at buying a secondhand bike with a differential of 10,000 miles between motor & chassis I would think long & hard.
Jersey maybe only 9x5 but we seem to use our bikes and put more mileage on than some people on this forum.:thumb

I was quite happy to get a new motor and driveshaft after 12.5k miles. It also had a new rear shock absorber fitted at about 15k, so it's almost like a new bike :D

The only downside is that the 2016 motor has the heavier flywheel, so it doesn't feel as responsive in some respects, but the gearbox is much better
