Are they easy to install? Do you just bolt them on, or do things need taking off / dismantling?

The Hepco & Becker ones need you to remove the engine mount bolts (which for most owners means buying the correct size Torx socket.) Obviously suggest work on one side at a time and I did stick a car jack up under the bash plate - but that was more for my comfort than an absolute requirement.
Other than this because the GS is not symmetrical from side to side the spacers are different sizes so I did have to redo the first side as I got the spacers in the wrong places.
However the whole job is easy to do, does not take long and does not need an extra pair of hands.

H&B bars are fairly handy but fiddly to get right, as mentioned you'll need a T55 socket to remove engine bolts... one at a time I think is the accepted wisdom just in case...
As said above H&D are straight forward to fit. On tip is to make sure the job is carried on a leval surface. I did mine when my 07 1200GS was new and performed the job on a slope! Not that extreme either. It made one side, the upper, difficult to thread the bolts in.
