Engine Cutout

I've had the GS for about 3 weeks now and it's done under 100 miles due to the weather.

Yesterday, while taking a fairly tightish right hander, low speed (10mph), clutch in - change down into second - the engine cuts out completely (red battery light on). The throttle was completely off and the clutch was still pulled in when it happened.

Pulled in to the side of the road and it started perfectly first time.

I'm a bit puzzled at this. I'm thinking it's something to do with it being a new bike etc. but could it possibly be something to do with the side stand not being fully up or incorrect idle speed?

Anyone else experienced this?

Yep, mine has done it once or twice when the engine wasn't fully warm - usually rolling up to a junction. My Firestorm used to do it also, occasionally. Something about big twins......................?

In cold weather my 1100 runs as lumply as hell when the engine's cold. but It may be worth your while checking the wiring on the ignition switch. It's not uncommon for the wiring to come adrift on the back of the switch and cause intermitent problems.

Engine Cutting

Happened to me last week. Cut out 3 times in 5 minutes when rolling off in 2nd/3rd when revs were dropping to idle.Engine was barely warm at the time as i had only travelled 2 miles from a cold start. This has never happened before in my 6000miles of ownership [ it's a 1999 model 1150 ] The 3rd time it cut i was within 400yds of a petrol station and thinking it could be stale fuel i filled the tank [ it was one third full ] and tried to make it cut by duplicating the circumstances but the fault had mysteriously disappeared. Stale fuel, damp in the electrics, dodgy connection somewhere i don't know. Was it just co-incidence that the problem went away after filling up? I will add that each time it cut out it immediately fired up first time without hesitation and it revved out to the red line without missing. Hope it was a one off.

Badly Behaved Yellow Hippo:confused:

My bikes covered 10,000 since I bought it new in January 2002. Did exactly the same once approaching a roundabout, before the 600 mile service. Reported it to Rainbow who could find nothing wrong, and to be fair, it hasn't done it since.

Hope this puts your mind at rest.

Mike

thanks

thanks for the replies, boys.

Glad to know it's not just me.

Thanks to MikeO for the link also.

These engines seem very tight when new so they will not like the lack of load such as you all described (closed throttle and clutch pulled in) and will stall easily under their own friction. As the parts bed in and the rings wear into place, the friction reduces and the power output increases significantly from around 6000 miles onwards. Whilst the engine is still newish, keep the idle slightly higher and give it a good thrash once you get over 1000 miles. Allow the thing to get well run in and you will find this situation cures itself.

Hmmm......mines done 16000+, Firestorm had done 25000.

Not trying to make a big thing of it, just wondering if it's a similar 'characteristic' to british singles which used to do the same thing. (Not that I remember, far too young for that!)
