Wonder if anyone else has experienced similar problem. Got home from work last night after a thorough soaking on the M57, filled up at the garage round the corner from my house and pulled into my drive and the bike just stalled. All the electrics seemed ok so tried to re-start. Motor cranked over but failed to catch, smelt petrol so thought that I had flooded it.

It was still pissing down and dark so I whipped out the plugs and cleaned them up, they seemed ok. Tried the bike again later and it started after being cranked over but cut out again. Tried again later same result.

Left the thing until this morning when I tried again, same result stated but cut out. It starts and idles whilst on the side stand, but as soon as you haul it upright to climb aboard the thing cut’s out. Have had a cursory look around the ignition and side stand switch and sprayed WD40 but still get the same result? Suspect the latter switch but that would only be a guess so any pointers welcome.

At least it had the good manners to conk out on my drive rather than on the motorway.

i had a similar problem on my 1100 last month.
problem ended up being a wire that had a break in it, in the wiring loom going to the ignition switch from the connector under the tank.
Just an idea, start ya bike up with it on the center stand and while its running turn the handle bars from lock to lock. if it keeps running try moving the wires that go into the bottom of the ignition barrel.
If still ok work you way along the wiring loom from the switch far as you can bending/flexing it .
If thats all ok, youll have to try summet else
Have you tried disconnecting the side stand swich( on the 1100 its on the left side under the seat) then putting a bridge between the pins in the connector?
this will illiminate the side stand switch possibility?
Good luck :beerjug:

Not sure this helps your exact case, but my bike will start and idle on the side-stand, but as soon as you haul it upright, the revs drop - if it's cold with no "choke" on, it will stall. Fine when it's warm.

I assumed that it was another of those "they all do that Sir" features.

Crap fuel?

I filled a van up in the 70's in a garage on the Basingstoke road in Reading the engine cut and had similar symptoms i ended up draining seawater from the tank about 2 gallons in all

You filled your van up 30 years ago, and your moaning about the fuel - you oughta use that van more often :D

I also had a similar problem.
I found that the drain for the fuel filler was blocked, allowing water to collect and thus stopping the tank from venting/breathing.
Easy, but grubby way to check is to open the filler cap and see if it runs!
Clearance is just blow up the tubes from under the rear suspension.

Thanks for the replies, turns out it was crappy Tesco fuel. Water had collected at the bottom of the tank so I assume that the pump would pick it up when I pulled bike upright.

Don't usually bother with supermarket fuel, won't be doing again.

:(

As i said in my post, it can happen in any garage not just supermarkets. At sea the tankers sometimes use seawater to flush their tanks, so there's always the chance of water in your fuel :nenau If things go wrong

Glad you fixed it :thumb

i'd check the drain hole under the filler cap. quite possible that water got into your tank 'cos that was blocked. reaches a level where it's picked up by the pump & you're walking.

Running rich on vertical!!!

Thought I had sorted it, drained tank and replaced fuel. Started and ran fine for about 500 miles so I convinced myself that fuel contamination was the problem. Still had momentary cut outs but had been doing this for some time so put this down to surging.

Anyway the thing began to cut out big time on Monday and finally died. Had to be recovered to an independant BM specialist. Symptoms as before starts on side stand cuts out when hauled to vertical? It would appear that motor is flooding as injectors are remaining open too long. They have been replaced but not solved problem. BM have been consulted and have not got any ideas, so this has us stumped (not difficult with me).

My person thinks this maybe a problem with the loom, anyone out there with any ideas?

Cheers

Update

Well folks just thought I would post an update. Bike has only just been fixed by RGM, problem turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator.

The bike was running mega rich on vertical, so injectors were looked at, these were not shutting off properly and were passing way too much fuel. Pressure was spot on when originally tested so injectors were replaced with second hand ones. Result they were now shutting off but still excessive fuel being injected and the bike would not even run on the side stand!

Fuel pressure re-tested a number of times and on one occasion the pressure was significantly above the limit. The bike had been hesitant at low revs but I had been waiting until the next service to attend to this. I suppose that this could have been a long running problem which has just deteriorated and the injectors just eventually gave up the ghost. Anyway the beast finally lives again, hopefully this has sorted it, just have to sort out the left grip now which has decided to kick the bucket.

This bugger is trying to bankrupt me! Anyway Roy spent feckin hours trying to sort, and made a very reasonable labour charge, new one for his data banks apparently.

Cheers for now.

Solved

The electrical problem traced a couple of weeks ago to the screw in photo, taken from the left of the bike, rider facing foward. I replaced standard item with a 25mm after doing the clutch:blast

The bugger nipped the wire from the diagnostic plug to the ecu.Did not show up for a couple of thousand miles but eventually caused a short, which confused motronic unit Traced by RGM after much head scratching.:thumb2
