Hi there,

Hope you can help.. Bike cut out on me the other day and wouldn't restart (had to push the heavy barsteward for a mile or so..). Figured it was a battery problem, as the battery has been giving my problems, but I subsequently charged it, and now the battery seems fine.

However, the bike won't run. It'll start just fine (and sounds grand) but immediately the engine cuts out (within about 1/2 second). No warning lights, nothing. Recently serviced, including sparks. It's an '05 with around 20k miles on the clock, and apart from the battery hasn't given me any issues. Anyone have any ideas?

fule pump relay

had mine replaced last week
by bmw road side assistance

Thanks guys, I'll start searching and reading.
Is it a part that needs to be replaced? Is it something that should've been caught in the service?

there is a black cover with slots in

twist it clockwise off it comes
underneath is a alluminium heat sink... is it all furred up and crappy looking

thats the bit that needs changing

Yes, as per Hangmans thread, only thing is my 07 GSA doesn't have the black plastic cover, probably because it doesn't do much.

Probably not, unless they had a failure on the test ride after the service.

Hi Guys, took it apart today, liberal spray of WD40, and tried to get it going, so I could take the bike to the local dealership to get a replacement part. Started fine, and got 100 metres up the road, before the engine started cutting out. Needed high revving to keep it going, but had to turn back.

Seems to start up ok, just can't keep it going. I uploaded a brief video of the bike ticking over to youtube. Can any of you budding mechanics please take a quick look and confirm that it's the relay? Video here This is the bike ticking over, almost stalling and self-revving the engine a little.

I don't think that anyone can def confirm the cause, but buy yourself a fuel pump controller and try it. Will cost you approx £80 and if it doesn't work, then you'll have a spare anyway!

That controller failure is probably the biggest cause of GS breakdowns, closely followed by the ring antenna thing (which stops the bike starting at all). Every GS'er should carry a spare relay or refer to Wapping's thread for a DIY fix. http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143272
:D

Just get one and try it. I'm on my third. Cost around £50. As has been said before, if you don't need it this time, you'll need it at some time in the future. I'm relying on sod's law, and carrying my next one in my top box.

Gipsy, can I ask where you get them for £50? I bought one a week or so ago and paid £78 for it.
