Engine dies on throttling

Hi There, I replaced my fuel pump relay last year, so I'm not automatically convinced that this may be the problem, but, I arrived home from my 20 mile commute this evening, and put the bike on it's side stand to open my side gate. Hopped on the bike again, and gave it a bit of throttle, and the engine spluttered and stalled. Now, the bike starts up fine, but as soon as I apply any throttle, the engine cuts out immediately.

Does this sound like another case of the fuel pump relay? If not, any suggestions? Bike's been running fine for the last 18 months. Thanks!

Forgot to mention: For the last week or so we've had horizontal sheets of rain, and atrocious winds, so could be another fuel p.r. problem.

Have you checked the throttle cables on the engine?
If just one is not working/out of position it might happen what you describe.

Is the bike on the side stand frequently ?.

Or only now and again. it could be water in the tank that's tipped to one side as the bike was on the side stand and it's now being picked up by the pump.

Engine idling but dying on the throtttle is also a symptom of a faulty fuel pressure regulator .

I had those symptoms.
It's a long shot but your ignition barrel might be fecked. The engine vibes cause it to fail when you rev it.
I'm on my 3rd barrel on an XChallenge, mind you that's after a shed-load of off-roading.

Is the bike on the side stand frequently ?.

The bike lives on it's side-stand. Is it worth emptying the tank? Thankfully it's only got about a litre in it.

your ignition barrel might be fecked

It doesn't 'feel' like an ignition/vibration problem. the bike took me home on a fast but lousy weather 20 mile commute, and it was only when I put it on it's side-stand for a minuite while I opened the gate that things seemed to turn sour. We've had ferocious weather over the last few days, and the bike has been outside through all of it.

I'd have a punt at disconnecting the battery for a while, reconnecting, then do the TPS reset.

Just a thought - the throttle position sensor of the 1200's is far from waterproof. The connector is designed in such a manner that even if water gets in it should not wick up into the contacts, but it does!

P.S. Does your your TPS connector have its little plastic 'wedgie' in place or has it fallen out like about 50% of the 1200s that I have seen?

I had the same symptoms as this just before my FPC gave up completely on me. I'm sure it was because the previous weekend I had washed the bike and put it in the garage not completely dry, so the FPC sat in a puddle of water for a week. In view of the weather conditions lately, my money would be on the FPC.

By the light of day it was an easy enough problem to spot. Shouldn't there be a clip holding this in place? Anyone know of a replacement?

Those automotive connectors have a spring clip, I suspect you may have knocked the fitting with your toes and it popped off.

Maybe a scapyard nearby where you can get one off a car, they are smiliar (if not identical) to the ones on some fuel injectors eg Bosch.

Vehicle Wiring Products may also stock them, I think they may actually be a Tyco connector. Some electronics guys on here may know a supplier. Maybe even a BMW dealer would let you have the clip off a broken part from their scrap bin??

A bit of wire would suffice as a temporary measure, or maybe a small cable-tie?

EDIT: I have a guard plate over my TPS to prevent the very problem you have. Maybe you might want to fit one ??

If you cannot find a clip, use a small spot of silicone each side on the join between the plug and socket.

I think its in the manual. Anyway, you disconnect the battery, leave it for a bit, then re-connect. Next turn the ignition on, then open and close the throttle to the stops three times, then switch off. Job done.

You need to do it when you disconnect the battery - in theory.
