Engine flush....Anyone ever used it?.....Any good?....:nenau

Just picked up a 12 year old Suzuki 600....dirt cheap....;)

It has only done 5,000 miles, but has not been started for 8 years.

Forgetting everything else that I would need to do (battery/plugs/tyres/fuel/carbs etc) I was going to change the oil and filter.

However, I have been advised...:augie, that BEFORE I try starting it, I should add 'Redex Engine Flush' to the oil....run it for 5 minutes...then drop and change the lot.

Then, some wag declared, that I should NOT flush the engine, as it will effect internal seals....

I know that someone here, will have the definitive answer....What do you reckon.....PLEASE?.....:)

I`ve done a fair few old bike resurrections...most of which had been non runners and stood idle for many years.

Don`t start or even turn over the engine with the old contaminated oil in it.

Drop the oil that`s in it and change the oil filter.

Just replenish with the cheapest supermarket oil you can find.

When the engine has had a run and got properly hot, drop that oil but don`t change the filter.

Replenish again with clean cheapo oil for a test ride.

After the first ride, drop the oil, change the filter again and add the recommended oil.

That`s all I`ve ever done and I`ve never had any engine problems on the bikes I`ve brought back to life. :thumb2

i agree with tarka,,,,and hopefuly no rust is in the engine on the turning surfaces, sometimes there is, above the oil line, this fecks engines

disconnect the plugs and spin until the oil light goes out and then what tarka says:beerjug:

Agreed.....apart from not spinning it at all until you`ve done what I said.

It`s always a good idea to turn the engine over until the oil light goes out before firing it up.

On most old Hondas, and a few others, putting the killswitch to 'off' will kill the ignition circuit while still letting the starter motor spin the engine.

If this isn`t the case, you`ll have to ground the HT circuit by removing the sparkplugs from the cylinders, refit to the HT caps, and then place the plugs against earthed metal before spinning the engine over.
If you don`t ground them you`ll blow the CDI.
