Engine Immobiliser preventing starting

Hi imchecked the forum for inspiration but still no joy. I have a 2010 GSA. Charged battery to make sure... I don't want to start pulling things apart. I tried spare key, careful to keep them well apart to prevent confusing the bike receiver. Any suggestions before I trailer it to a dealer?

You should be able to start engine with side stand down if it is in neutral...

On the rider display next to the speedometer, does it say "EWS" on it? If it does then the antenna ring round the where the key is inserted is broken and needs replacing. It's no good taking things apart if this is displayed.

Also make absolutely sure you haven't accidentally turned the engine kill switch on the starter button.

Try turning the handle bars and in different positions try again switching off between attempts just in case there is a broken wire in the loom

In that case the antenna ring round the key is broken and needs replacing by the dealer (a well known problem for 2008-2010 bikes). But you can get round this, buy a new antenna ring and remove the harness from the antenna ring attached to the main key switch. Clip the wiring harness to the new antenna ring and use you're spare key taped into the new ring and you will then be able to start the bike with the other key in the main switch. This is a temporary means to get the bike to the dealer. I know this 'cos I had to do this in the middle of Morocco to get a bike home.

Most of the Antenna rings should have been changed by now. You may be able to get one under warranty or goodwill.

I should be able to find out from dealer database to see if recall was done or not. Am I to assume this was a recall item then?

It was a chafe in the loom cause a break. Also exhaust flap seized caused relay to melt and oh... a coil had gone. At least £700 bill for this.

No need to be concerned, just remove the exhaust flap its a useless piece of junk anyhow. In the real world shite happens and stuff breaks...........live with it and ride the bike.

Unless you have some sort of warranty then leave BMW Battersea well alone; take your bike to see Steptoe in Kingston instead.
