Hi
Anybody had recent engine failures due to the r/h valve problem ?
I have seen 2 58 plated RT's one with 1500 mls the other and latest less than 6000 mls.
I am just trying to find out if anyone has had or knows of any other recent 1200's any model with this problem that still seems to be an issue and not being addressed in my opinion correctly by BMW.

No, don`t think it`s an issue! Well, it obviously is to those poor souls who have had an engine problem but it`s not common.

I`m sure someone will come along in a minute and try to prove me wrong because I`m sure a few GS`s have had an issue with this:blast

Have you got one or are you thinking about getting one?

Hi Bighair, my 1200GS R/H Cylinder has just gone pop. only 10k on the clock, out of warranty and an immaculate pampered 06 bike. Not happy, once fixed may turn Japanese!! :(

Around tail end of last year I heard there was a shortage of valves used in the 1200 , read into that what you like ?
Possibly a lot of issues worldwide or a production issues ?
I know manufacturers do not want products with problems , they also do not like to amidt there is or could be a problem.
But when this has been happening for some time now as this site has had posts on this concerning 05 bikes .
It may only be 2 bikes I know of , but that is also between 25% & 33% of the bikes I personally deal with, thats at lot precentage wise in my books.
Also
Did the cats also get changed when the work was undertaken at dealers due to debris and oil ?

Not sure what work was undertaken during dealer service?? seems alot of people suffering similar problems on this and other sites. I have several other bikes (all Jap)with huge mileage that have never missed a beat, very dissapointed with BMW.

Yes i had two engines go down, both for the same problem,R/h Zyliner go,And both times while overtaking.:rose
Leaves you with a 600 single, 06 plate 20k dealer serviced. chunk of shit
Ebayed with No 3 engine having done 50miles
Ride a 99 R1100R now, 70k miles SAME ENGINE:clap cost me £1k:Motomartin

what possible difference could that make?

oil draining away from the rhs cyl perhaps, though loads has been written abt it, not sure how realistic it is... Any of the forum's pro mechanics may want to give us an opinion here...

Sounds like a batch of duff valves perhaps.. I am also slightly curious to know if latest bike falures can relate to the good old 70 year old design piece of boxer lump ending up making almost 100bhp to the litre from 7k revs ...

I d bet these 1200 will be the last of the line as BM will eventually need to get modern and that the next all new GS will wear something else..

Yup mine went,

55 plate 14169 miles

outa warranty

15/08/08

was told i got 100% to parts and 50% towards labour from bmw

still cost me £900

took 3 months for them to get parts , rod shortage

Don't HP2s make around 120hp from basically the same engine? I've not heard of any engine failures.......stand to be corrected, of course.

My car engine would seize repeatedly if this were the case; all the cylinders are directly above the oil and will drain immediately.

70 years ago they didn't have nikasil bores, compound titanium valves, nitrided cranks, decent bearing shells, sintered valve seats, knock sensors, lambda-controlled advanced fuel injection or highly specialist alloys for pistons and heads. Other than that, I suppose it's as old as the hills. By that reckoning, all car engines are 100-year-old designs. I do wish people would stop spouting the same tosh.

Get modern? Not sure what you mean? What engine development is it short of, then?

Is the bike standard or have you an aftermarket can fitted, all that popping on overrun is a lean mix and thats as standard from new

The 1200HP Sport chucks out around 135bhp and a Dutch company have got it up to atound 145bhp:thumb

The only way BuMW will drop the Boxer IMHO will be because it can`t meet the latest emission regs.

Lke littleredrooster, I`d be curious to know why theop thinks that a 1200 boxer engine isn`t modern:nenau
