I have just had the 12K service done on my 1200GS and when I got home I noticed that the Oil sight glass was showing less that ½ full, I checked the level 1 hour ish after a 20 mile ride, the bike was on the centre stand on level ground.

While I was dropping the bike off for the servicing I mentioned to the Service Manager that I hadn’t noticed that my bike was burning any oil. He said that they are now using Castrol BP20/50. I assumed that his oil has a higher viscosity than the ‘usual’ oil and that this oil is being used to slow the rate that the oil was being burnt. I don’t think that oil even this thick would take that long to drain into the sump.:nenau

I got home after the service dept closed, so I could not discuss the seemingly low oil level with the service manager. What does everyone think, should the sight glass ever be less than ½ full.

Another thing, my bike doesn’t have the usual toys i.e. no ABS and the service bill came to the £300 region (£200 was labour!) – welcome to the world of Bee Emm, I hear you say. I looked at the schedule of work that was conducted on my bike, using my engineering background, I think that I would be able to do the servicing myself. I am not sure that having a full compliment of dealer stamps in the log book is that much of an advantage, for instance aside from depreciation, will I get the money I spent on the servicing back when I sell if I have a full dealer service history.

I know that if I do the servicing myself I will not have the ‘diagnostic tool’ and if something expensive were to go ‘pop’ I would not have any leg to stand on in my attempt to get them to assist with the repairs.

What does everyone think

As long as you can see oil in the sight glass it's ok in my book.

20/50 (or the 15/50 that I'm running since I last serviced it) is also perfect in my book.

To check other peeps books run a search on the site.

But, for the last word on oil, check the definitive book, written by the guys that designed and built the engine.

My bike has been less thirsty since moving from 10/40 to 20/50!

Yip +2...............After the last service the lovely red stuff was about 3/4 up the glass when cold...........!Incidentally someone posted something a while ago which was the same with my last GS..........! Keep filling it.......and it will drink it.................... however if you let it drop to about 1/4 way up the glass.......It seems to like staying there......!No more drinkypoos.....! Some engineering types might be able to explain why.....!

I agree! :thumb2

Go for a run on the bike.

When you stop park on the sidestand

after 5 or so minutes park on the centre stand

then check the sightglass after another 5 minutes

You have an oil cooler with oil under the headlamp leaving it on the sidestand will allow it to drain

I would get it serviced in the dealer if it's less than 2 years old BUT If you want to do oil changes buy the parts from the Dealer and use BMW parts and print off an online service sheet and stick to it an dkeep a record

Thanks for the answers guys. I spoke to the dealer today, they said that if the oil level is up to the top of the sight window the bike will tend to burn oil, so we only fill it to 1/2 way up the sight window. But, he offered to top it up if I was passing some time.

cheers
