I bought a 1200GS. It may fall down on the fuel economy and weight but I feel it more than makes up for those concerns in the whole package. It's the bike I wanted initially but bought the F8 based upon it's low seat height option. Little did I know at the time the 12 also has a low seat option which is in fact lower than the 8, therefore at 5'10" I'm pretty much flat footed as opposed to toes on the 8. This makes a heck of a difference for manoevering whilst in the saddle.
For me the F8 is a brilliant bike, only let down by build quality.

Well happy with the change over.

yeah mega bike. like the 800 as cheaper to start with. a friend of mine sort of got me interested in the 800 as he is on his second one. 40 000 mile on his first one with no problems. he previously had 3x 1200s and with them all had issues. do you see the finish being better on the 1200.

All vehicle will have issues. The way I see it I have the warranty to sort any issues out and then another year of ownership to pay it off. It will either prove to be reliable or not, hopefully it will be. I feel the 12 is better finished in certain areas , eg - a proper centre stand , not one than rolls across the ground thereby removing paint on the time of use. This is an immediate rust area that looks unsightly and unforgivable for my money.
The 12 also appeals to me because I don't feel I have to blat it everywhere. The F8 is buzzy whereas the 12 is relaxed. I found the F8 very difficult to ride below 70mph on open roads. Not difficult as in hard , but in self control!

I have no doubts about the reliabilty of the 8 , my concerns are those concerning longevity in the finish of its parts.

i totally agree with what your saying. the centre stand is not that stable. i am seriously considering moving my bike on and trying something else. tiger 800 or 990 ktm possibly,

Update

Finally got a verdict on the paint.

Because it's only in a small area (at the moment) the engine will be having a respray, rather than replacing the casing, as the manufacturer has stated there's no guarantee it won't happen again! I think that's a good result??

So, I'm gonna wait until the back end of the year and get it done in the winter.

Dont worry Rodoo like all internet forums it's mainly the negative posts that raise their head and there are obviously are some issues with the finish.
For a true verdict ask Micky of this forum 60 odd thousand miles on an 800GS and his puts many a new one to shame.
I've had 2 x 800GSs 35K on the first and coming up 25k on the current without paint flaking issues maybe the cure is to ride them in all weathers all year round and just wash them after use.

Corrosion etc.

Corrosion anywhere on the bike is dissapointing. Unfortunatelly our beloved machines age and so do we.
I got my first experience with rust on a weld of a main frame, when the bike was few weeks old. It was at John's Clarks, Dundee and the guys changed the whole frame as warranty job. This may sound like good news, but as the new frame was not numbered, they had to taper the numbers which broke the paint coating of the frame and it is gradually rusting there. So after all the hustle, I did not get rid of rust anyway. I just god it on different place.
My engine's paint serves well, but over time there is some paint flicking off the oil sump. I have done repair myself while the exposed was still small.

In ideal world, the enamel coating should give good protection of the aluminium engine body under and in most cases it does. Unfortunatelly as there as many scenarios as there are riders, it does not work always.
Reports on this site clearly show, that there are/were some quality issues on side of BMW. While ACF50 and similars can help prevent corrosion, there are other parameters which can't be affected.
As in case of every bussiness, sorting corrosion issues under warranty can be tricky, especially when the bike is older and it is difficult to distinguish between natural lever of wear and tear and corrosion due to the poor finish and material failure. As general rule, they will try to do as little as possible.
While it would be nice if they accept the liability in all cases, I would not say they are unreasonable.
While rusted engine is a personal tragedy, for them, it is just one bike that was not produced up to the good standards.

I feel sorry for anyone who has this issue, for whats its worth I can add my name to the list of happy owners who have not had this issue.

My K1300S with 16,000 and my F800GS with 10,000 on the clock have no corrosion to speak of, although i noticed a little surface rust on a bolt on the front brake caliper assembly on the K.

I ride them in all weathers all year round and just wash them after use, usually after each ride on the K in the winter or once a fortnight in the summer. I haven't got a leaf blower ! Weekly for the F8 in the winter. I always use a chamois and soak up the puddles in the nooks and crannies. CW who service my bikes give them a good coating of ACF50 when serviced in the winter months.

Hope you get it sorted

As reported in the other thread, I eventually got a call from JC yesterday offering a big discount on both parts, I reckon all the hassle I was giving them (and it was quite a bit!) finally did it !
I had taken the manky ones off at the seekend ready for painting but I will now just replace them with, hopefully, new ones !
:D

I had an F800S back in 2006/7 that needed new engine casings twice (under warranty) because of this issue.

I can't believe they still haven't got this problem sorted. Then again, perhaps I can.

Are they still replacing engines under warranty?

David

Same for me on my f800 gs - plus also had side panels replaced twice for same reason - huge flakes flapping of after a few months. I only eventually cured it by trading it for a GSA. Job done.
