Engine Pinking

Absolutely no chance. I took the bike back at 1000 miles and I was told the pinking was actually not pinking - it was a faulty exhaust flap. At 3000 miles I took it back again for the pinking problem. Diagnosed a blown head gasket.

So tell me how a BMW dealership service dept can't spot a blown head gasket!

Unreal and unacceptable.

They have to go a long way to recover their credibility in my opinion.

The exhaust flap could have been faulty and may show up as fault. So they fix that fault. If the fault persisted why did it take 2000 miles before you took it back? Why not quick blast round the inner link road and straight back to dealer.

Well. I thought initially it was still the exhaust flap. But I must say that when the bike was initially returned I would would have to labour it quite a lot to get it to pink.

I ended up riding it around and as I'm fairly sympathetic towards my bikes, I didn't really cause it to pink too much when riding it. BUT after a while the problem got worse and when I put VPower fuel in, then the problem really came to light.

Circumstances really.

Pinking

Just back from Slovenia where I experienced what sounded like pinking at 3700 - 4100 in lower gears when climbing the passes. On the thrash back from Dussledorf to Calais there was no pinking despite plenty of hard acceleration.

Thoughts?

Chuck some octane booster in the tank and try again.

Had I not been using the 100 octane fuel that seems to be purely for the benefit of bikes in Slovenia I too would have put the pinking down to low octane.

Thoughts......

climbing the passes......less air for the engine to breathe. ECU tries to compensate for altitude.

Dusseldorf to Calais.....no problem with altitude and no pinking.

Probably not pinking - might be something worse

's what I thought at the time and while trundling through northern Europe.

Unfortunately it was making the same noise in the more mountainous regions of north Kent yesterday. Thus, I don't think it's pinking :-(

Dropped it off at Cooper BMW yesterday.

The engine does run weaker at the revs where the "pinking" happened and a steep climb loads the engine so actual pre-ignition is possible. My experiences with altitude are the engines run richer. The ECU will compensate but pinking should be less rather than more likely. The knock sensor could be suspect though they are usually very reliable (on any vehicle).

Mine has a rattle in neutral with clutch out that stops when lever is pulled. I've been told its gearbox input shaft end float. Mine has not yet got too bad, but I suspect if it were to rattle about in gear, the noise could sound like pinking.

Interesting points.

Bike has only just reached 5,500 miles - last 1,900 done in 10 days we spent in Slovenia from 16 September.

Yours has about 1/9 the mileage of mine so its fair to say the gearbox issue is unlikely. :)

It could also be some trim rattling. The revs it happens at are just where the bike makes the most noticeable vibration. Those sorts of sounds can be a nightmare to track down.

I thought as much ;-)

Trim rattle has occured to us and we spent a significant amount of fruitless time looking for loose stuff - and annoying people within earshot while trying to reproduce the rattle when stationary. I really hope it is trim rattle.
