Engine Protection Plate/Sump Guards - opinions

Anyone have a strong preference between Wunderlich & Touratech sump protectors?

Wunderlich has more drainage/lightening holes, which seems like a good thing for wet conditions and possibly cooling of the engine. They also specify no reduction in ground clearance (Touratech didn't mention anything in that regard).

Wunderlich has a pretty convincing write-up in their catalog about the benefits of their guard compared to stock, so I'm leaning in their direction. Thanks.

I had a Wunderlich protector and found it a wast of time. The screws were hard to get out. I have had no problems with the standard HP sump protector.

Sump Guard

The std guard is not much use if you use the bike for any serious off-road. I hammered my plate flush with the sump after a thrash in the desert - not much protection left on it at all.

I have a Wunderlich plate on my HP2 and a Touratech on my 1200GSA.
Both offer good protection but I would choose the Touratech guard. Better item all round.

I would say a decent bash-plate is one of the important mods to do to the HP2.

I had W/L plate. I installed it and didn't like it (took it off and sold it). I now have the TT plate and it is a MUCH improved over the W/L product. I ride my HP off road and need the protection. Good luck. Jim

I have the TT guard fitted. Bit of a job to take off for servicing etc. (me fingers is too big!)
Noticed that it covers all the damaged/dinged parts of my bike. Should have fitted it sooner
As well as the extra coverage an added benefit is that it is supported off the frame (centre mount) - so the sump doesn't take all the force. (hope the frame's strong enough )

Thanks for the input on all fronts. Looks like Touratech has the edge (among the group that feel a sump guard upgrade is worthwhile).

TT Sump Guard

I chose the Wunderlich sump guard and am v happy. At the South African GS Challenge the designers of the HP2 frowned at the use of the frame as a mounting point for the TT sump guard if you hit it hard its gotta bend!
I also agree that the stock guard does not inspire confidence.

But would the sump survive the force of such a really big knock?
At least you can ride with a bent frame

I chamfered the edges of the clamps to the frame, they seemed a bit sharp as delivered.
