Looking for some info / advice

Just fitted an engine sump extension to the R80GS and the centre stand springs run extremely close to the sump extension , they don’t touch but are very close . Also looking at it if I ever needed to remove the centre stand , the countersunk bolts are on the inside of the stand and don’t look like they could be removed without taking the sump and extension off .

Any help appreciated

Turn a chamfer onto some nuts and fit bolts from the outside in.
Bend the loops on the stand outwards to move the springs away from the sump/ ext.

Thanks Mike , I had thought that just bending the loops outwards may just give that extra bit of clearance

With regards to the bolts , could I not just fit the stainless spacer (which has a chamfer) on the inside and then fit bolts from the outside in ?

i.e. as in the lower set in picture below or is it not long enough to bring the chamfer right through to the other side (assuming then that the frame brackets have a chamfer in them also ?)

You are worrying over nothing, Just assemble as it should be

Why would you in the next 20 years "need" to remove the centrestand bolts? Its not as if it is going to be your "daily" bike

And if you do, by that time, it would be good to drop off that sump and clean the strainer etc while you are in there! :rob

LOL - I'm going to drop the sump extension off anyway to fit new centre stand bushes and bolts so will decide from there what to do , I do agree that it will be a while before I need to take the centre stand off again but the engineer in me still says it's got to be done right ;-)

If you put the nut on the inside, wouldn't the spring get caught on it as the stand moved up? Just sayin'

I've found that the bolts come out ok once the nut and spacer are removed. It's a bit tricky getting the Allen key into the bolt head; may need to cut one down. If I'm wrong you'll have to take the sump off to remove the stand, as mentioned by DrFarkoff earlier.

Ended up assembling it as per the manual - i.e nuts on the outside , with new SS bolts , spacers and springs it all fits OK and no rubbing , I think the old springs must have been distorted

BTW - you are correct the nuts would foul the springs if mounted on the inside

Just for clarity nuts on outside is the correct orientation as per BMW Workshop Manual

It might seem a bit simple, but in picture two, if you were to turn the spring around ( not up and down) 180 degrees so that the longer top straight part of the spring had it’s off set nearer to the stand it would be less likely to touch.

That’s exactly what I did with the new stainless springs
