From the flywheel back they are different, different ECUs. Probably other stuff too.

Good question, I'm looking to replace an engine in a 1997 R1100RT that's knackered. Trying to widen my search options that's all.

I need to replace an engine in a R1100RT? What other engines will fit?

R1100 s pre twin spark, one on ebay now with 20 odd thousand on the clock

Suggest you call Motorworks, Motobins etc if only to find out just what your options are. If you have the frame number handy when you call it will help identify just which engine you have. Are all the ancilliaries OK?

There's lots of intechangeability of parts with these engines

Depending on which year, yes.

The differences are Exhaust, Wiring harness, BMS (ECU), oil cooler pipes, poss gearbox, plus a few other bits.

To be honest I wouldn't recommend it. Too much to change for little benefit.

The 1100 in my opinion is a good motor, replace it with the same.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes all the ancillaries are fine. The engine runs ok. A ham fisted mechanic managed to break the casting around the oil light switch so left casing is knackered.
