Hi,

I’m new to the GS and loving it so far. I have probably a silly question about heat - I’m breaking in the engine and it’s been super hot outside. I have to navigate traffic before I get out to open roads so get stuck in slow moving traffic. The coolant temp hits about 200 and the fan kicks in and drops, so all seems fine. Do you have to worry about hot temps during engine break in or engine overheating in general? Or could you in theory let the bike idle for ages and just let the fan do its job (like a car). Assuming that if the temp is in the standard operating range it doesn’t matter if it’s at 175 or 200?

I know it’s designed to tackle off road which would like have it running hot so assuming traffic is no problem. I should probably just ignore it and ride, but thought I’d ask.

I'm guessing you have an LC model ?

If your provide a bit more data when you have a question it can make things a bit easier

Normaly providing the Model & model year ie 2016 R1200gs helps to narrow things down

When the fan kicks in do you get any warning lights ? have you checked the coolant level ? is it correct

My 2016 fan used to cycle when the bike got hot , i checked the coolant level it was normal and never worried since

Not sure of the trigger temp for the fan i'll go have a look

Cant see anything related to trigger temp , only pressure

does it say anything in the handbook ?

Just ride it and let the bike sort itself out. I assume you have the display set in F not C to get those temperatures. If the bike gets dangerously hot it will throw up a warning.
I have an R1200RS LC and I have ridden in Portugal when the ambient temperature was 43C. The bike coped better than me.

You are in the K series section of the forum. None of them are renowned for their off-road capabilities. I have though taken my 1600 down some pretty goat track like paths and very muddy lanes. That bike does overheat with a vengeance, if you don’t keep its very large (and very hot) radiator clear of muck.

I have a 2019 GSA

when we had the two hot days earlier this week, during city riding mine hit 94°C and 82°C on the motorway (when I checked). Fan kicked in now and then at the lights but not constant.

So 200 is around that (the higher) if you have Fahrenheit selected

So roughly the same temps.
