Enginge Oil - Am I getting tight?

and Greg .. that really was a load of old bollocks you posted :augie I bought 20x-50 because that is the spec recommended in the owners handbook (so you know what you can do with your porridge and tomato soup :aidan) x still love you mind ;-

Seriously now ... read this post and the link that is contained therein.

If you still think that Duckhams Classic is right for your bike, at least you will have made an informed decision.

But seriously - the wiring in my house doesn't meet the current 'spec'. But it's good enough.........

wow - how spooky is that?

..after I posted about your bollocks Greg, I opened the link you gave (in the 14th post) and it is quite simply the best explanation I have ever ever had on engine oils and what all that mumbo jumbo API specification means!!

The penny has dropped on what you mean .. whilst API SF is the minimum recommended in the owners handbook, it is actually obsolete

Quick quotey from Gregs link shows that

SM Current
SL Current For 2004 and older automotive engines.
SJ Current For 2001 and older automotive engines.
SH Obsolete For 1996 and older engines.
SG Obsolete For 1993 and older engines.
SF Obsolete For 1988 and older engines.
SE Obsolete CAUTION: Not suitable for use in gasoline-powered automotive engines built after 1979.

So well done Greg . you snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and im going to make sure that I get some competitively priced API: SM for the next topup and refill :thumb

For once I think I understand the oil business :beerjug:

i think it's only fair to point out that the API is, since that's where greg's document comes from:

"Who We Are
API is the only national trade association that represents all aspects of America’s oil and natural gas industry. Our 400 corporate members, from the largest major oil company to the smallest of independents, come from all segments of the industry. They are producers, refiners, suppliers, pipeline operators and marine transporters, as well as service and supply companies that support all segments of the industry."

i'm not sure the trade organisation of the american petroleum industry is entirely unbiased in the way it dishes out information.

You're not wrong.

I have nothing against Duckhams oils - I used to use Duckhams R when I raced (very few people even know that Duckhams made such an oil!!). What I really don't understand is why people use out-of-spec oils when the correct stuff can usually be found on tesco shelves.

Greg
Greg the oil you mention from tesco
is that their 'own brand' 20 ~50 ? picked it up a few times but never been able to see a API spec on it

See this thread

tesco value oil doesn't have a stated API rating.

Greg

But WILKO own brand does... 15w/40 API SJ and only £8.49 for 5 litres.
