Eprom Chip fitting instructions

I have recently bought a BMW Eprom Chip from ebay

The fitting instructions were enclosed, however they are in german and being the complete xenophobe that I am, I only speak english (knew that I should have paid more attention at school!).

Can anyone translate/paraphrase the attached files or at least give me an idea of their content ... please?

Also, is there any advantage to cutting down the air inlet as (I assume) it suggests or should I leave it as standard?

The warning at the bottom says that it's only for the C1 scooter and fitting to a twin will result in serious engine damage.

Hi,

You need to follow the instructions in your manual to remove the fuel tank (if you dont have a manual I can scan the instructions for you). Then remove the motronic box. Open up the motronic box (may need prising as its glued toegther with silicone. There you will see the chip (see piccie below). Gently and very carefully remove the chip pulling it evenly as you go. Now replace with the new chip, again gently, carefully and evenly. Refit lid and tehn refit the motronic, tank etc and go ride.

Be advised that static can kill chips etc. So dont do this after skidding up and down on anylon capet whils wearing yoru nylon jim jams! I would normally wear an anti static wrist strap. But I've replaced loads of chips in PCs, Printers, copiers without wearing one and have never had a problem.

The translations are normally amusing, but you'll get the gist of what they are saying. If you do do this, please post the results.

Thanks Taipan, I'll read up and install it at the weekend.

If I get the chance, I may even try the translator ... it should be good for a laugh!

Regarding static ... earth yourself before you touch a static sensitive device by touching a metal water pipe or the metal chassis of an electrical device (plugged in!). This is the only precaution I ever take and I've never had a problem.

transaltion

1. make sure ignition is turned off
2. remove tank
3. identify motronic unit as in picure below
4. remove motronic unit. To remove the universal plug open the metal clip.
5. now you can remove the lid of the motronic unit (torx 4 screws). A sharp knife may be helpful to remove the lid as it is glued with silicon.
Carefully lever the lid open with a flat screwdriver.
6. pictured below is the mainboard; remove the plastic clip of the original eprom/chip. The chip has a marker/notch to prevent wrong installation. The chip seat also has a notch.
Remove the original chip with the help of a small screwdriver - carefully lever it out of its seat from both sides. Insert the new chip carefully - the pins are easily broken.
7. neatly apply silicon to the metal lid - it needs to be 100% water tight!
8. re-assemble
9. security metal clip of the universal plug must seat with audiable 'click'. If necessarry you may need to bend it slightly.

To improve the torque graph you may have to tweak the asymetrical air intake; remove the righthand side air intake pipe.
To remove the pipe loosen the clamp between 'butterfly?!' valve and cylinder head. First push the pipe into the air box a little bit, then wind the butterfly valve out of the rubber gasket to enable you to remove the pipe. ( I havent got the slightest idea what they are talking about!) ;-)

The last bit just sayst to check that the throttle cables are seated properly as they might jump off.

How did you get on? Have you fitted it yet? I'm still waiting for mine to arrive. How long did he take to deliver your chip?

Chip delivery was about 10 days from payment.

Fitted it yesterday. Haven't been for a ride yet due to work comittments but fuelling is definitely richer - it now starts off the button without any choke.

Sounds rorty with the Remus pipe but don't know if that's new or just 'cos I haven't been in a position to rev the bike hard for a while!

Whatever you do ... remove the correct box to fit the chip. In my enthusiasm to fit it, I removed the box immediately in front of the battery box first - its a bugger to get out, its a bugger to get into and bugger, it's the wrong one!

Fitted mine over the weekend, strange, mine sounded throwtier as well, don't think it's made it faster, but then again, i don't know what chip was in mine before, i don't think it was the orginal, but it feels like it has bettere low down grunt, and the best thing from me.... no surging
