erratic tickover after new gasket...help

That's the one, did you do anything with it? Is it sealed?
I have heard some mixed ideas about the following, which is the reset of the throttle position sensor.
I have heard that you turn on ignition, but do not start the bike, and then you slowly roll the throttle to wide open, hold it for 5 secs and then return it slowly to rest position. The mix is some people say you repeat the procedure 4 times.
I believe it is referred to as the throttle position reset procedure so you might ask around.
I tried it both ways but never noticed any difference with my bike.

Mike mike,
Cheers for the reply mate, I haven't touched that sensor and all looks good from the out side...
Ive done the throttle reset a number of times now with no difference to the bike...
Ive rang Grimsby bmw and a very nice service manager listened to my story, After he stated "bring the bike down, we will plug it in and look at the bike for 1 hour".. When I asked the price I was sat down, but I didn't need to...
For a technician, the computer and an hour of his time will cost seventy pounds..
Im happy with that, I was expecting double..
But before I do I will strip off everything that I touched, put it all back together one last time..Tosh

Hi Tosh
I still think its an air leak with the mixture showing so weak before you go to a dealer just check that the try spraying some easy start around the throttle bodys if the engine sucks the easy start in the revs will rise showing an air leak.

Hi guys,
Sorry for not replying sooner but ive had man flu...
I haven't done a single thing to the bike since last time, Give it a couple of days and I might be able to get my hands dirty and let ya know whats going on...Cheers Tosh

Read through this thread several times now, since my machine, over 300 miles since I put it all back together having given it a good clean & service, has developed an erratic tickover.
Yesterday morning the bike started up and sat idling at it's normal, burbly tick-over. 3 - 4 minutes later, booted and spurred, I throw my leg over the beast and start the short journey to work. 2 miles later, as I hit the first 30mph zone, into 3rd gear and part throttle to maintain speed, the bike has lost it's nice burbly idle and seems to be missing a beat ever so slightly. Same on the way home in the evening.
Today did a 70 mile trip and it's only within 30 & 40 mph zones that it's noticable. On the open road, under partial throttle openings to maintain speed the ride /feel from the engine seems normal.
Checked bike over after todays ride - Battery checks out fine. Both plugs on the airbox seem to be seated properly. Took a squint under the airbox and the breather pipe appears to be connected.
Eldest son has worked on Can-Bus equipped cars for years. His solution - disconnect the battery, leave over night, reconnect and see if problem still there. Sounds a bit like the old computer fix, switch off - wait a minute - switch on - see if problem gone away! Maybe the softwares written by Microsoft :D.
Airbox off tomorrow if battery "fix" doesn't prove succesful. Re-do everything I did last time, to see if something has worked loose.

Will report back when all done.

Hi Tosh sorry you're full of snot, FWIW i did my gasket the other week and mindful of your post i paid extra attention but it didn't stop me ham fisting the spark plug connector lead back into the cap/coil on the piss nearly all the way in before realising. Its a long shot but just wondered if its worth checking your 'pins' in the cap make sure they're o.k & you havent got one bent or broke especially as this would give a 'plug' problem as someone initially suggested

Like you say its a long shot, easy to check tho' cheers for that...
Im determined to get in there this week at sometime..
Is there an online service manual anywhere ? Ive looked and all I could find is the useless owners manual...
Anyhoo as always I will keep ya posted...Tosh

Battery disconnect "fix" didn't!

Blooming freezing up here today so after a little ride to check out the slow speed / idle hiccup and a visit to the local motocross track, it was into the garage with the bike and an afternnon in with the tribe this afternoon as we've had more snow today :eek

Temperature allowing I'll strip it down tomorrow night and report back.

That's the thing isn't it, I love tinkering and messing about in the man cave, but when its freezing outside its not enjoyable inside...too bloody cold..
The thing is, winter takes so bloody long to go...Tosh

Well, just back in from the garage and the feelings starting to return to my frozen fingers.

Learnt several things this evening whilst trying to find the reason for this un-even running:-

1 - I'm getting better & quicker at stripping the body work off of the GS

2 - The air box can hold quite a bit of water. From where it came I know not. I suspect that its from the crank breather - the water smelt "oilly". But why so much in just 350 miles since I last had the air box off?

3 - My Intake Air temperature Sensor (the one on the top rear section of the air box) seems to be fubbard.

Haynes say that the one they tested whilst doing the manual gave a reading of 6.7k Ohms. Mine shows an open circuit. Not sure if it is fubard - I'd have thought the all singing and dancing electronic brain would have kicked up an fault indication if a sensor was kaput. I could of course be wrong about both assumptions, so a phone call tomorrow to a friendly technician at the stealers will, I hope, put me straight.

More when I've talked to the man in Inverness.

Water in the airbox? I would think that there is a leak off tube/valve at the bottom of the box, perhaps that is clogged backing up the water in the box..
My box is bone dry and shows no sign of water ingress at all...
Air temp sensor, I haven't looked at or done any research into these...Time to do some now me thinks....good luck and keep us posted ...Tosh

Don't know of any drain from the airbox. My Honda's have all had one though . . . need to look closer.

The stealers wouldn't let me talk to the mechanic, so the bikes going to Inversnekky on Friday (just happened to have booked the day off - supposed to be quality time with the boss = SHOPPING :D) to get the computer interogated and to collect a new air temp sensor. Hopefully I'll return east with either a fixed machine or a better idea of what's wrong with it

Updates will follow.

Well I took the plunge and went into a bloddy freezing garage.
I started stripping the bike again, I did notice that there wasn't a rubber grommet/ring around the crank case breather hose ..crank case end..
Also I have found a loose plug, just sitting there doing nothing...The plug is "open" as in there is no weather proofing, so its open to the element's...As electric cables usually have a memory, I cant see where it plugs into...pics to follow..
ITS JUST BELOW THE BRIGHT SILVER PLATE

THERE IS TWO PLUGS PLUGGED IN NEXT TO THE CAM CHAIN TENTIONER

So has anyone got any ideas as to where it plugs in, Ive looked and cant see anything that looks like it would marry to it....Cheers .Tosh
