ESA Problem after 2 weeks ownership!!

Thank you guys. I'm erring on the fact the handbook says the temp could be an issue. Unfortunately, the bike lives outside and it's Baltic up here at the mo!!

sk8muie, you are correct and I'm wrong about being off the bike to adjust the Pre-load. Since you posted I've read up a little on it. My current HB dosen't mention it.

The temperature thing is a given as the shock oil will be slower to move through the small internal valves/holes whilst thicker.

I 'm certain I had an ESA GS where the HB said don't sit on it whilst adjusting the PR. I think it was an 1200 TC but can't be sure.

I think it common sense to take the weight off the bike while increasing the PR, it is after all only a small electric motor. Perhaps unimportant going softer.

I think you virtually say yourself that 'weight off' it operates normally.

Hope it works out ok for you.

You're asking a lot for the tiny servo motor in the shocker to lift you and the weight of the bike in really cold weather.

I would have thought that it was engineering common sense to give it a helping hand, all you have to do is straddle the seat, feet on the deck with all your weight on the ground and not on the bike seat until the ESA has finished it cycle and the helmet symbols have stopped flashing.

I always do this and if I have my pillion on the back who cannot reach the ground, I ask her to put both hands on my shoulders and pull downwards. This is just enough to remove enough of her weight to allow the little motor to do its job.

My GSA-LC had more of an issue with this than my GS-LC almost certainly due to the extra weight of the bike...more so with luggage. It's not normally a problem once you do the above procedure.:thumb2

Fully agree :beerjug:

Guys, tried it today first thing with no weight....nada!! It ain't playing.

And I agree and it's what I have always did, and that's to straddle the bike every now and then resting my backside on the seat to feel it rising.

But today, not a jot!! So it's getting picked up tomorrow and dropping me off another Adv!!

Good luck with the replacement bike mutie!

It's horrible when new bikes have glitches, but it sounds as though you have got it sorted now.

UPDATE: Fault code on bike and suspension would drop after 20 secs. New suspension strut fitted and all is well. Pick it up tomorrow again...happy boy!!

Quick turnaround by Parks in Glasgow. Cheers Scott

You are actually very lucky that the unit was totally f*cked and showing fault codes (according to dealers most of the time they do not ) and also that BMW have replaced it

I didn't even think to ask if there was a cost involved...I just assumed there wouldn't be as I only picked it up 10 Nov 16.

And I actually hate posting anything that has happened to the bike that requires a visit to the dealership to fix....you only ever hear of the things that go wrong on here and to someone thinking of getting a GS, it maybe doesn't read that well....but rest assured, despite the odd glitch here and there, it's a brilliant machine and the only one I will ride.

But I agree Neil...so glad it wasn't an intermittent fault, but it's been highlighted now and should anything go wrong in the future, it'll have a bit of history to fall back on I suppose.
I know some have said that it's a small motor and we shouldn't expect it to lift rider, pillion etc etc, but I've had it lift myself, pillion, BM metal luggage with roll bags on top of each pannier and top-box as well as a full tank bag with absolute ease for the 2 yrs I had the bike (previous GSA with ESA) hence my original concern when it wouldn't lift just myself. And i 'am' an engineer and have mechanical sympathy for both my T5 and my GSA and treat them like they're going to be a vehicle for life and certainly wouldn't have expected the servo motor not to lift me and luggage....they cost too much bloody money to abuse, that's for sure.

Glad it has worked out for you........I still think you should make the little motors life easier!
