ESA servicing

My rear ESA shock is leaking oil and it's softer than it should be but at 37000 I expected it. I know that there are a lot of posts about suspension and I was going to replace with Wilbers but now I want the water cooled GSA so I need to go cheaper. I believed that the OE shocks were a sealed and so a non serviceable unit but Firefox racing in North Yorkshire offer an ESA service for a bargain price. Has anyone tried them and if so what do you think or can you recommend anyone else.

Just chop it in as it is, dont waste money on it. The next buyer will have a warranty from the dealer and they will have to replace the shock. Thats what id do

I can't do that as the WCGSA isn't available until March and I don't want to be the first to find the problems so I will get one later in 2014 which means another 8000+ miles on a shock that's past it's best

No I'd like to, I normally do when I reach 24000 but it's my second GSA and I'm waiting for the WC Adventure

I would go with the Firefox repair. Sound a bargain at £169.00.

Sounds like very good value Is that for both shocks or each? it's not that clear, still good though.Mine is up to 35k now so am expecting to have to do something with it soon, Wilbers would be best but can't afford them at the moment.

I've just had the rear shock off my k1300GT done by Firefox, only got it back last week and it will go back on the bike this week so I can't tell anymore than that. Firefox did say that they would replace the internals with superior quality items than the OEM. At £169 for the rebuild as opposed to £1400 for a new one from BMW I thought it well worth giviing this a shot.

At that price it sounds a bargain when you consider fresh oil, new seals and recharge with gas plus labour, VAT and postage charges. If mine go awry I would probably have mine done as Wilber's are nice, but expensive.

The price sounds about right to me. I had a (Dutch) WP emulsion shock rebuilt by a moto cross suspension specialist. He said the so called sealed for life shocks can usually be rebuilt but need a bit more work. Mine cost £100 a few years ago by a one man business so £169 seems about right for a larger outfit, more work done, VAT, etc, etc.

I sent the rear shock to MCT suspension in Suffolk as they also said that they can service the rear ESA shock on BMW’s and at around £80-£100 plus VAT were slightly cheaper than some. A new replacement ESA rear from BMW is a little over £1200 and with Man math’s that’s more than a grand off the new GSA WC.
I posted it to them on the Friday and they said that it would be back with me the following week and true to their word I received on Thursday for a cost of £118 which included postage. They replaced the seals and put in better quality oil but unfortunately I haven’t been out to try it yet, work gets in the way.
