Well, having bought a 3207 from Kong Hong . . . . thinking "it's just a PMR radio . . ."

Now that I've read the manual, should I be considering buying the 'programming kit' for £20 off eBay, so I can program in the QT / DQT feature?

Will I need to program the thing anyway for VOX operation when I use it on the bike with my Autocom?

Are there any other essential features I should be enabling on this thing?

Can anyone recommend a "3207 community website" I can go to for further tips and advice?

Another bloody slippery slope toy!

Cheers,

Neil.

The programming can be done with some DOS-based software which is a free download from at least one Honk Gong retailer's website. But you will need a lead to go with it. That can be obtained from the UK, although it's pretty expensive or from Hong Kong (but you have to wait!!).

So we've got our pair of 3207, but one won't talk to the other - suspect CTCSS squelch settings . . . I've had a look at a couple of websites suggested but they don't cover my initial 'idiot's guide' requirements.

I've ordered the programming lead and software but would like advice from you guys - or point me towards an 'expert' I can talk to - as to what features to enable on the 3207 via the programming, and general 'PMR good housekeeping'?

Cheers,

Neil.

Hi Neal

I have the same unit also purchased from Hong Kong. The KPG -87 software is pretty easy to use and there is also a good help section. What you may find is that not all the features (e.g the voice scrambler) are actually installed on the 3207, but most of the ones you need will be.

When you get the software and lead, plug one of the radios in and read (go to Program/Read from Radio) what channels are programmed in - You may find that's what is causing the units not to be able to talk to each other. Secondly check what QT/DQT codes are being used as that may also be the problem. If there's a difference unplug the unit you have just read from and connect the other unit and write the data to this unit.

I have programmed mine with the same PMR446 channels found on the UK spec TK3201/3202 so I can talk to friends using these models - As the 3207 has 16 channels opposed to the 15 found on the 2301 I have left one clear (no QT/DQT) for emergency use.

I have programmed the two keys under the PTT for scan function and squelch off. The vox should not need to be enabled for use with your Autocom, since the Autocom unit takes care of all this.

Hope this helps - If you need any more info let me know your e-mail address and I can send you a copy of the data from my unit for you to program in.

Thanks Stevie

I'll pm you my email details, so I can have a look at what should be in there.

Ah - you're not a sponsor are you Stevie - I can't pm you. I'm at [email protected].

I was going to say that I'm still of the opinion that getting a Hong Kong 3207 for £40 and then having to buy the prog. kit is better than paying out over £100 for a 'real' unit. . . . .
However, I'll hold my noise until they're all working fine . . .

Cheers,

Neil.

Cheers Neal - I'll send the Kenwood data file over later this evening. Once you have your software up and running if you copy/save it the following location C:\Program Files\Kenwood Fpu\KPG87D\DATA you should be able to read it.

Hope you didn't pay over the odds for the software since its available foc on the web and I managed to get away with just the lead for £9 :o
