Essential tools for a long trip?

Just on a similar note: What tyres would you recommend on this trip?

I was initially thinking of TKC80 but wouldn't probably last that long...

What ... even for Mongolia

:beerjug:

all depends on your trip. i had a comprehensive tool kit but no road cover. was so if anything went wrong i was already used taking ti apart and had no issue with having do it on a trip

no point having tools if you dont know what do with them its just extra weight

If its chain drive, what about a chain splitting tool, a short length of chain and a couple of split links...

Small and easy to carry but might make all the difference.

if was me.

i would take following

user manual
2 tubes
patch repair kit
fuses
tyre levers
air pump
tools to remove front wheel and fairing to get into battery.

thats it.

what ever elase goes wrong not going be too good.

if going very far or into remote ares add following

id take impeller and seals,
tools to do the same job
tools to service bike.
and chain breaker riviter

that should be handfull tools as most are common items

Spares -
lots fuses, chain links, bulbs, lock wire, wd40, chain lube, rags, breaker bar, thread lockduct tape, lever/pedals, few spare fairing screws and spare nuts bolts that common on the frame.

there is a video on youtube lad showing you exactly what need and whats for.

these items would do every thing need bar a fecking engine rebuild

and even then most the tools would be same

i was able fit all mine into a used toiled bag

optional items would be spare spokes, tyres, gs9-11, haynes manual, laptop with bike manual and repairs, even seen lad with spare handle bar. the list goes on. but dont over do it.

chains and oils get in local shop. if think going wear own out then have set bough and posted to a hotel some where.

some find having spare spark plugs also good idea. i just carry the old ones taken from last service.

Great tips all

The absolute belt and braces I do is,

1. Leave CC details with trusted dealer who is happy to work off text or email and do DHL for you.

2. Leave CC details with trusted family or mate for contingency, E.G, money wiring if you lose wallet, forward hotel bookings if you only have a phone sig and no wifi, language issues etc etc etc, there are a million and one things this is good for, probably won't need it but I always feel good knowing that it's available if necessary.

As ever don't over plan and have an awesome trip, oh the post about waiting for bits is spot on, I had a week in Kota Kinabalu and it was great, I'd have just blasted through otherwise:)

Cheers for all that.
I am going on f650GS. I am not worried about fixing things like chain or bearings.. I've done that before, I just dont want to take too much... but then again I dont want to forget something basic that would stop me for a week or two...
My concern at the moment is tyres. As most most of my trip will be on the road I was thinking of taking one street rear (I am thinking here Metzeler Tourance) and a set of TKC80 front and rear? I still have about 2000 miles on my current front tyre so I could finish that off and then change to TKC somewhere on the way? What do you think, would that last another 6-7k miles?

Motorworks, Next day delivery for me. They are very nice people and try and help with any problem you come across....
PS make sure you give them your reg number because they have alot of cross referencing to do to get the part for the cheapest price. nice people.....Tosh
