Essential tools for a long trip?

One thing to add: a set of forkseals and steering head bearings (if you know how to change them). Cheap, small and light. On my trip to Centra Asia I did take a fair amount of spare parts with me (most of them already mentioned), they really don't take a lot of space and most are cheap and easy to get at home.

A few other things:
Change the long bolt in the rear shock to rear fork if it is still the factory all thread bolt.

Also take a set of high strength bolts for the subframe, odds are one or more will brake in Mongolia. You may want to replace the factory bolts with some stronger ones before you leave. The F650 site describes how to put a nut on the blind side with some Locktite, so you can roll it out from the back if (when) it breaks.

It is easy to say ship things with DHL, but it can take forever to get them thru customs. Order early or preship such things as tires / chains. You can order tires in Russia from Dennis (if your are interested I can give his information, need to look it up, or go to Horizons Unlimited, which assume you allready have.

Take also a spare brake / clutch lever.

Brake pads can go frighteningly fast under the wet and muddy conditions.

Consider steering head bearings, small and cheap. Works only if you can find the tools. The 12 mm allen wrench can be hard to find. Buy one and saw off a 1" piece, so you can put a socket on it. Cheap insurance.

If you have to necessary skills to use, buy a small voltmeter.

As other mentioned it all depends on what you know how to fix yourself.

I may have overdone my toolset and spare parts, but i did not want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere for lack of a simple foreseeable part or tool. Turned out I had something I did not foresee that in the end that did me in, but before that time between the 3 bikes on the trip we managed to patch up most issues we ran into.

One more thing. You said TKC's: great tires, but they do not last long enough. Think Heidenau's K60 or something like it instead for such a long trip.

Also, water pump kit is nice, but look into what it takes to change it. Think about changing the oil return line at home if you serious, as you should be, about changing it in the field.

Cheers KP,
Got spare bearings, pads, water pump kit and lever... It's probably too late for the modification you mentioned at the beginning of your post as I am leaving in 10 days.

I know I am probably taking too much but I only have 3 months and I don't want be stuck somewhere, again you cant foresee everything but you can try to be prepared...

I will have look at the tyres you mentioned, already got a set of TKC and Tourance though. I will do Europe and part of Asia on Tourance and change for TKC when the tar finishes then just carry on until they grip is gone, chack them away and do the rest on Tourances - this should bring me home...

I shall post some pics of my bike here later next week... :)

Thanks all!!

Some odds & ends I always take....
One of each size of o'rings and washers threaded on a piece of wire.
Couple meters of Ductape - wrapped round an old credit card.
Long cable ties.
Electrical connector strip
Tube of super glue.
Couple meters of two core wire.
Small piece of fine wet&dry.

Cheers KP,

Plenty time to do it now, versus having to wait for days for parts or do it somewhere in scorching heat and no shade or pouring rain (or crash if things get ugly). You can do all of those things in a day easily. I strongly suggest you take care of it now, you should inspect / lube all the rear suspension linkages anyway. Changing the waterpump out with the standard oil return is a pretty good chore, and that is an understatement. As a minumum take the parts with you and do it on a rest day somewhere before things break.

Where are you goig to find Tournces when your TKC's run out? Check this one out for tires in Russia: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/northern-asia/i-am-looking-tyres-eastern-51510
