So my second motorcycle tour i headed out over the Eurotunnel with the intention of getting to Pisa before heading back.
The route - Cornwall - Folkestone - Calais - through Belgium - Germany - Luxembourg border road (fantastic) - Black forest mountains - Austria (Alps) - Italy (Lake Garda) - Pisa - Monte Carlo - Cannes - Route Napoleon - Calais - Cornwall.
This journey was met with many questions about the weather, distance, time and cost!
The Weather - Fantastic! It was dry clear and sunny for 95% of my travels. BUT! Until getting into Austria it was very cold! We camped in the black forest and the tent in the morning were like an igloo. That day also brought some interesting and hair raising riding! Going over the black mountains along the B500 the weather was pretty good with nice blue skies and sun shining except with a HUGE BUT! The wind coming up the sides of the mountains caused a battle to stay upright. As we got higher it was evident that the wind was also blowing the snow up and over onto the roads. My conti trail attack 2 tyres, as great as i think they are, were no match for even 2 cm of snow! And neither were I! Now down to a walking pace letting the idle take me across the stretches of snow patches while trying to hold the bike upright against the sliding tyres and howling wind is not something id like a repeat of. This is adventure though right?. We managed to press on and take a road off the mountain and out of the -8 degree's increasing the lower we got eventually back into + temperatures, we found a cafe on the eastern side of the mountains warmed up and the cracked on.
We had all in all 1hr 30mins of rain during our travels which is amazing. Once we got to Alps the weather started to warm up peaking to +19 as we arrived at Riva Del Garda.
From then on the weather was warm and pleasant all the way home gradually getting colder the further north we got returning to calais.
I knew before i went that i wouldn't get over the high alpine passes and had accepted that! regardless of not getting over them it still doesn't stop you riding roads far superior to the UK with far less traffic.
Have the time off? just go for it! Thats the best thing i were told!
Hope you enjoy the picture's. Webbo.
