Can everyone make sure these bolts are correctly tightened and let me know if not. I dont want what happened to me happen to anyone else (see broken gs thread for details).

Cheers Phil

hello Checked mine today ( are they torx ) Thanks as they were loose had to turn 180 degrees to get to correct torque

Yep, mine were not too tight. I don't have the torx bit for the torque wrench but I loctited them and tightened them up.

Just been to the garage to check mine

Three loose one ok bike is 4 only months old, now paint marked.
Thanks guys.
Lyn.

Replaced bolts with Stainless when Bike's new

Georgia's Bike has done 16,500 miles, mine 12,000 miles.. just checked and all bolts tight :)
No they aren't seized ;)

Yep... just been out to check. They weren't 'loose', but they weren't 'tight' either.. I've tweaked them up enough to be able to sleep at night.

Thanks for the warning... check yours now! :thumb

Interesting ....... I replaced most of my bolts with stainless but was advised against changing bridge bolts and also brake caliper bolts because they had a tensile strength which was less than those provide by BMW..

Any thoughts ....anyone

same problem here. found pinch bolts loose when doing routine checks they were only finger tight!! bike had done approx 3000 miles.

Loose bits!

What the flippen heck is going on here.. I'm worried enough as it is about being on a bike, let alone one that could fall apart under me! I am going to make sure I check those bolts before I go out again...
Mind you, I'll have to get a new torque wrench, most of my tools are all Land Rover sized items if you know what I mean! :thumb

4,500 miles, top bolt slightly loose on both sides.

Thanks for the information. I'll borrow a torque wrench and do them properly before I ride again. Definitely worth a mention at the next service.

Many thanks for the tip.

I removed and replaced mine to fit Wunderlich's "hard parts" that protect the steerer stops / telelever wishbone and the orignal ones were slightly loose and I noticed, totally free of any kind of loctite or similar thread locker... If they are leaving the factory clean and working loose I guess a little Loctite could be the solution, although usually BMW are a bit pendantic about which bolts they Loctite and which they don't and some bolts they specify as "to be left clean" ie. no Loctite... question is are these bolts non-Loctited for a reason or as a cost cutting measure? Regardless if they're working loose on so many bikes and may even be causing crashes Loctite seems the way to go...

Ok guys, let's get out collective panties untwisted here. At every service, you should be going over the various chassis and engine fasteners to make sure they are snug.

Each bike has peculiarities about what loosens up. The early Honda Hurricane 1000s had triple clamp pinch bolts that loosened up so badly that there was at least one crash due to it. I only know that because I was a Honda mechanic at the time. GSXR engine cover bolts all loosen up like crazy. The list goes on.

FWIW, mine were A-OK, so this is not some sort of universal "problem". It is really about getting to know one's bike, which is a good thing.

Checked mine today 8000 km ... 3 out of 4 bolts loose!!
Thks for the advice.

Just checked mine (not with torque wrench) and I couldn't move any of them, except one which was quite snug as it was...

Thanks for the warnin; I'll keep an eye on these!

Me too

Checked mine and though not loose, were well shy of the 24nm. (around 18)

This is the right setting for them isn't it? Officially from BM ?

BTW, only done less than 2k miles.

Thanks, Skippy. (back in the saddle again (ooo errr) at long last) :bounce1 :bounce1
