Evskij’ & Wifeskij’ week long jaunt to Eifel…

EV, here's an adaptation of the standard route we take when we head into the Eifel. Will be going in May 17-20th again. We stay close to the border with Luxemburg at a small village called Koerperich but I made some changes. Basically Motorway down to Leende - recommend a stop for a coffee at the hotel - waypoint 2 along the route. Then down through Roermond and the nicer roads to Cochem.
Also worth stopping at the parking spot at waypoint 20. This is a great view over the castle at Cochem. Hope this helps
cheers

Than you Grant,

The route that you have sent is near identical as to what I have created. I haven't made these public just yet, as I want to tweak them before doing so.

I have also placed a couple of interesting waypoints in my route. more to be reviewed when I publish the routes.

Your stop over at waypoint 2 is noted. Thank you.

Waypoint 20 will feature in our planned four day trips, on a couple of occasions.
We (Mainly I at the moment) are planning on having a day off the bike, half way through the week. As a result of this, we will likely to be doing some walking about the place, and perhaps a party boat to catch in the afternoon / early evening.

Our Jaunt will be from Friday the 17th, through to Friday 24th of May.

If you time it right we could ride the first part together with our Club. We will have 6 riders heading out from the Hague at around 0900. First stop will be the MacDonalds at Charlois south of Rotterdam where everyone gets together as some come from Rotterdam and the surrounding areas. Then we will head out at 1000 for Eindhoven and coffee at Leende (Waypoint 2) around 1130. Then off into Germany following same route. May is still a long way off and we can talk about it at one of our London meet ups so if you wish to ride together for this first leg you're more than welcome. Cheers!

What a lovely bonus for you , Ev.
McDonald’s too ! Yum

Sounds good Grant.

However I fear we shall be a day behind you, and I doubt that your pose will be willing to hang about waiting for us to rock up, seeing as we shall be docking at HOH, on Saturday the 18th…

Still, we might be able to at least cross paths for a handful of hours.
Once I publish my routes, these will give you an idea as to where we might be able to meet up, if at all possible, without straying to far from a pre-planned routes. All four of my day trip routes, are circa 150-200 miles,
Inbound* route is around 260ish miles long.
Outbound* Route is around 340ish miles long.

* excluding sections to and from home in the UK.

Having tweaked major overlaps of routes (thank you Wapping), here is what the proposed tour looks like.

Most of the overlapping would naturally occur in the vicinity of Cochem.

Routes can be viewed and used by Friends on my MRA account. I will make these publicly available when I am certain that these are good.

I see you return via Calais, using the motorway from Cambrai to the Chunnel; good choice.

Before Cambrai, it takes the pretty much traditional east to west route, passing just north of Charleville-Mezieres, having been through Daun and Wiltz. All good.

The route from the Hook to Cochem, looks fine, too. Though I am not sure what you are up to at points 15 and 17?

You appear to be going to points 15 / 17 and then turning around?

That being said, I haven’t checked the route(s) for glitches as such.

Aha... good question..

Waypoint 15 is an unusual place to view the land and to stretch ones legs.

Waypoint 17 -18 is a missing link between the two. This has been updated by simply moving the waypoint in the required direction. Simple solution to see more, and to await riding same section of the road again. However looking at the route, I have decided that it is not worth adding time and extra distance to ride through another three villages, after 260+ miles on that particular day.

Glad that you approve of our planned return route Richard. It started out as a near 385 mile behemoth and near 9 hours long, so I left a few sections out and made it as straight a line as possible, whilst keeping it interesting to a degree.

Good stuff, EV.

You did the right thing by cutting bits out. Sometimes people ride two sides of a triangle, when taking the straight line along the hypotenuse, makes much more sense on a long day. It’s surprising (or not) how much those “But it’s only two little sides of a triangle“ add up in a day.

Simiiarly, blindly following ‘scenic’ green lined yellow roads *, village after village, can get tedious if the real purpose of the day is to be on the 16:30 ferry back to home and you now wish you had got up earlier.

* Just because Michelin has decided to colour them that way, to cater for Mr and Mrs I-am-on-Holiday (who form the bulk of the market) and because Bikermate Bob cannot read / imagine a map….

Wise words and more to the truth that a true thing is it self. That day will see us do close to 450 miles overall.

I've done over 500 miles in the day once, that was to Wales and back, in 2017. I knew about it when I rocked up home at near 11pm... I was a bit younger too, perhaps being called "a bit stupid", wouldn't be unreasonable.

EDIT:
I am keeping the option open for the return leg somewhat on purpose, as we haven't just yet booked a return ticket for the train.
I suspect that darling wife might/will start to make subtle "I've had enough" noises, the closer to France that we will get, which might result in an unscheduled overnight stop, somewhere along the way.
Without sounding like a tightest Yorkshire man, I shall use our Tesco vouchers, to double up their value and book a Flexi (or what ever they are called) ticket, with voucher offsetting the difference between the standard and the premium options. After all, it is "free money' that had been pinned on the notice board for the past 15 months or so.

Pah! You are not a man until you have done the 1,000 miles or more in a day. Leave Budapest before dawn and be in London, well before the nine PM news. Ting Tong (don’t leave me) Tom went further…. he passed by London and went to Slough.

Good idea to finish up the day short of Calais. I have taken up doing just that and then crossing back to our green and pleasant land, mid-morning, the next day. Generally no queues. Recommended. The same applies to going over to France, leaving England mid-afternoon.

I don’t bother with a flexi-ticket, as a phone call to change the time or even the day on the cheapest (non-flexi) ticket is rarely more than £20 to alter and sometimes less or zero.

Would gladly do it, by dear madam starts to snore on the back of the bike by 8pm :sleep. Meaning taking an evening crossing after work on Friday, would see us rock up at the tunnel around 8pm, or 9pm at the frogs. "Not happening!!!" :wife, I can hear it in my ear now, clear as a whistle.

Thank you Doc, 👍🏼 we shall have a day off the bike, and have a good wonder about, plus sample some local specialties.

Location added to Google maps list of place to eat/drink at.
Worthwhile having a trip on the boat Ev goes to a village on the river where you can get off and have a walk round have something to eat. Can't remember the name of the place. I'll look.

We are planing on doing at least a party boat for a bit of chilled out fun. Sitting outside a bar is nice, but sitting at the bar that is slowly moving past the river banks filled with wines and all the little towns is much better.
