I have a random fault where the large EWS light comes on during start up check and immobilisies the bike - if left for 10 mins or so it seems to start again
the bike is 4 months old with 4500 miles on clock
Anybody had similar experience?

Yep, its usually the ring antenna that is at fault, it enables the key to disarm the imobiliser and is the raised plastic area around the ign switch, sorry, warrantee job :o

Yup, mine's just been carted off in a van back to the shop... it's 12 months old and 8500 miles.

Prior to this I've never had a spot of bother with it. The engineer who came out said they don't go wrong that often (apparently it's the same system they fit in the cars, and they've been using it for 10 years or so). But when they do fail, the bike ain't moving anywhere under its own steam.

BM Assist have been fine, and it should be a quick fix. I was hoping I'd avoid all the reported faults though :(

Same problem here .. ring antenna had to be replaced. Unfortunately, I was on the way to the Boreen Run when it happened. Had to have the bike trucked back to Dublin and could not be repaired until after the bank holiday weekend.
Naturally I was dissapointed but I still love the GS.

I was a bit more fotrtunate - mine was parked outside the house at the time! But if it had happened a week or two earlier I would've been getting it recovered from Glencoe...

Dipps, I think the message is to get it replaced ASAP. I don't know why they tend to fail, they seem to be a sealed unit from what I can see. And the BMW engineer told me that they have been using the same system on their cars and bikes for years now. But if/when they go, you're stuffed!

I don't know why all the mobile engineers don't carry a box of spares with them..?

Electrical Prob Also

I had a problem yesterday , was riding for about an hour , stopped switched off 10mins later went to start up and there was no lights on the ignition ! it was like there was a flat battery, turned it off and on a few times then eventialy got some life in the dash and the starter was clicking away but not turning the engine,,,,,, then turned off and on again and it started straight away !!! once it was running i noticed the clock had zeroed itself !!

Any ideas to what might be the cause?

Andy, that doesn't sound like an immobiliser fault. More likely an earth problem?? I'm no expert I'm afraid.

I seem to remember there were some electrical issues which were resolved by a software upgrade - might be worth doing a search on electrical problems.

Just prepare yourself for an hour or two's reading...

Yes, its happened to be twice :spitfire once in Italy - at the time when it happened i thought about selling the bike as an 05 bike should'nt have these faults IMO. But once you ride it you realise how you bought it.

You are spot on -has now been fixed by Cooper Reading at no cost - they did a recall at the same time
