Evening all,
Have seen a few "exPolice"bikes advertised and wondered if anyones's converted them for 2up riding? As, they all have rear seat covers and panniers in the way of rear pegs etc. and was wondering how easy it would be to convert for the wife to join me... Excuse the numpty:comfort only just started looking really. Bit of of help much appreciated.

Hi,

I did one. Not cheap and police bikes are poorly spec'd. Majority only have heated grips, no BC either.

You will need a seat, grab handle set, rear pegs, panniers, rear light section, under tray including seat lock, plus loads of other incidentals.

My advice FWIW, is either buy one, keep it as a single seat machine, or buy a civi bike for 2 up touring.

Cheers,

Steve.

A lot of people think about getting retired Police bikes in the belief they must have been well maintained forgetting that they will almost certainly have had a hard life. The cars, for instance, are often used 24hrs a day, as when one shift ends, the next one begins, and so on. How often have you seen cars and bikes parked at the scene of crashes, sat their with their engines ticking over sometimes for hours, with their blue lights flashing. We never thought it did them a lot of good being treated like that.

Twelve years ago I bought a Police-spec Pan from a local car recovery company, all the appearance of a Police bike, with only 8,000 miles on the clock. A mechanic would ride it up the motorway equiped with some tools and a can of petrol. With so little use, they sold it to me. I rode the bike up to Sonic Communications in Birmingham who convert most of the emergency vehicles from standard, and two fitters whipped off all of the beacons and extra lights, yards and yards of wiring I would never need, fitted a dual seat and rear pegs, and the bike was mine again. A wonderful machine which has taken me around the US twice as well as many European countries.

Thanks for the info Chaps.
Pick up coin, call heads/tails, toss coin, go for it.
