Moved to Devon from Derbyshire last year, my 1250 GSA bought from the now defunked Piddcocks at Nottingham in 23 is now due a second service, which according to the app will be at 10k. The fist service was on time rather than mileage hence the 10 and not 12k interval. The 2 dealers closest to me are Exeter and Plymouth, Exeter is closest but would like some feedback/recommendations etc from members rather then just going for the closest.

Plymouth have always been good for servicing my bikes. Have no experience of the Exeter dealer

I would use Ocean on the principle of supporting a local business rather than some huge behemoth that used to call itself Bristol Street Motors

We've always had good service from Ocean Plymouth, no experience of Exeter.

Another with good experiences at Ocean Ply here. I've only wandered into Vertu Exeter once a couple of years ago and wasn't hugely impressed - I think they'd only recently started the bike side and it looked more like a car showroom with a small bike bit on the side (IYSWIM).

Purely anecdotal but I've had the same impression about the Exeter dealer. Lack of engagement from the staff and a lack of gear all left me feeling quite cold about the place. I'll be riding back to Bahnstormer for my service.

Agreed Ocean are far better than Exeter ,there is around a 3 week waiting list at moment though.

Actually that's not too bad for the beginning of the season as people blow the dust off their trusty steeds. CWs of fond memory usually had a waiting list of at least twice that and frequently more. Another good thing about Ocean Ply compared to Vertu Ex is that there's a retail park next door to wander round and if there for an all day service/whatever then there's frequent bus services into the city centre from the bus stop right outside. I seem to remember that Vertu only has other car dealers around it.

I live near Chester.

And when I need Genuine parts , I call Ocean in Plymouth. Even though they are probably the furthest away. They are always helpful and friendly and seem like genuine people.

I have zero experience or knowledge when it comes to their sales or service department though.

Thanks guys, you've confirmed my own thoughts. I have visited and used the cafe in Ocean BMW, I've only ever driven past Vitru and didn't get a warm feeling. I'll sort out my service with Ocean later today.

I've only used their service dept and they've been pretty good for servicing and extended warranty work - as you say very helpful, no quibbles with the warranty work, and will go that extra mile to help people out.

I've worked in a few BMW main dealers and many other franchise main dealers.

The basic rule is if they're primarily a car dealership, they will probably be soulless thieves.

Smaller business ONLY survive by pleasing their customers. So they're the ones to go to.

Generally you're not wrong. Ocean are a reasonably big group spread out over 3 sites in the SW who started out in the car business but they seem to have been able to keep the bike side separate from the car side (at least in Plymouth - not visited the Penryn site yet). More info here.

they have not had to change their business name to try to disassociate themselves from the dire reputation of the previous incarnation of the company. With 3 sites, the CEO can keep tabs on the whole operation, very much like the well regarded Cotswold also with 3 sites. Vertu (ex Bristol Street Motors) has 195 sites with 7500 employees and the CEO will only be looking at the share price and bottom line.

Not sure how old this thread is but of the two go to Plymouth Ocean Bill the service manager is so helpful and knowledgeable, Tanya is a great communicator if something is on order from Germany she keeps you in the loop with progress. I would recommend them whole heartedly.
I live near Ashburton where’s your nearest town? Cheers good luck Michael
