My 2002 1150R seems to have developed a tiny hole near a weld on the exhaust collector box near to the outlet. Would it be ok for me to weld it ( I assume its stainless ) or are the collector boxes prone to rotting?
If so, do I get a second hand one or fit a Y piece to dispense with the cat?

I’ve got a Catt in the shed if you decide you need one mate.

Keep the Cat, ditch the silencer and fit a 'stubby'

In terms of engine management, the Cat is what matters, after that it's just weight and dBs

collector boxes are about £30 o e bay. I believe I may have a similar problem. When I modded my sidestand, the welder said he could see a hole on the seam, but couldn't fix it as it gets too hot and would need special welding etc. I suspect there'll e tight bolts etc to deal with on a 17 year old bike...I can't see the hole yet so I am holding off for now, but how hard is it to swap a collector box?

The only 'hard' part is disconnecting the lambda sensor without getting the wires into a massive twist - it's a good idea to find the connector (it's under the tank annoyingly) and disconnect it. Makes taking the lambda sensor out much easier.

Oh yeah - and PLENTY of releasing fluid (PlusGas / ACF-50 / similar) on the clamp bolts for a week or two before hand. ;)

May try welding first. Got a mate who is a superb welder and probably get him to take a look first. If not the it's a second hand box
