No not a thread about pinking or 6 bars & above on the temp guage :D

Has anyone used exhaust heat wrap tape to cool things down?

Reason I ask is while riding 10 odd hours back to Istanbul from the Med coast a couple of weeks ago I managed to frazzle my legs knee down. They were red and scored with little blemishes...on parts of the ride I was seeing 38deg on the thermometer while wearing full gear + Forma adventure boots...so that didn't help.

I'm guessing the main source of the heat is from the engine but am willing to try some heat wrap if it lowers the temp blasting onto my legs a little??

Comments??! :aidan

Engine is mainly aircooled, so for any meanginful difference I'd guess getting the cylinders heat away would be more useful. Unless you like resting your legs on the exhaust pipes :D

Wrapped the piece just before the silencer to stop it melting the heel of my boot (Bos slip on, without a heel guard) Worked well in that respect, but held water and sh*te so when I took it of, the exhaust looks awful.

Overheating

Were you wearing shorts?, I've ridden my 1150 through Death Vally and across several desrt areas and it has been very hot, never had burns though.
The only time I did suffer a very painful burn (from the sun and I mean painfull!) was riding My 1100 RT across the Nevada desert on my way to Area 51. My over trousers had ridden up from my walking boots (too hot for m/c boots) unknown to me and I got sunburnt on the back of my ankle resulting in a very large blister which stated bleeding not at all ammusing!./
But apart from that never been burnt anywhere else don't think the bike is the problem, wrapping bits will cause them to overheat anyway more trouble.

When I said full gear I meant it...shorts and flip flops :D

Was out & about for 4-5 hours yesterday with no problems to report. Might have been that I was wearing boots with plenty more ventilation...or that I had not been sat under the sun for a week...which is exactly what I had done prior to toasting my legs. Passing out under a parasol with your feet sticking out under the midday roast is not a good idea :D

I was about to open another thread about overheating but found this one so will add my 2 cents.

Just got back from 2 weeks in Montenegro where the temperature was around 40 C all the time. 1150 GS is a nice bike to ride but I challenge anyone saying it stays cool. This bike is an absolute nightmare when it gets hotter. I could compare the heat coming out of '11 1200GS and KTM990 and none of them generated even half of what the rider feels on 1150. I must admit KTM's engine was ridiculously hot but the rider does not feel it too much. In 1150GS all the heat goes straight on the legs. Last year I had non-leather boots that on hot days got 2 sizes bigger because of the heat. I guess part of the problem is the way the pipes go close to the boots and some custom pipes make it even worse.

Anyway, I survived thinking my 1150 will be awesome for colder British days.

I heard you could use different oil to minimize overheating but I never tried that. If someone has experience here please share.

I agree.
Last year while I was riding across France on my 1150 GSA I had a couple of occasions where the bike stalled when pulling away from service stations.
It was mind numbingly hot and the temp gauge was over halfway cruising at a steady 80mph. Think it might have been the fuel vapourising in the injectors before getting to the engine.

Cant imagine what it would be like in a desert!

Try cleaning out the oil cooler possibly full of crap and these engines are oil cooled.

Too hot to handle.

When I was riding my 1150GSA in sunny Saudi Arabia, I used to get reddened skin through my airflow trousers. It was hot and especially riding round town with so many go-slows and traffic lights.
Now bike is garaged in the UK and this time riding an electra glide. That is a fu*@ing bigger aircooled engine and I know now why HOG riders use highway pegs while on the road.
